Student movements and sociopolitical transformations in Bangladesh have always been intertwined. In 1946, the chief architect of modern-day Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan), Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, popularly called Mujib, was elected the general secretary of the Islamia College Students Union. He was an activist of the Bengal Provincial Muslim League, and a member of the All-India Muslim League Council from 1943 onwards.
