'Praan Pratishtha'

The first step is 'Pata Puja' Sculptors make the frame that forms base of the idol

A special texture of clay is needed to make face, hands

A very smooth and soft variety of clay is used to carve the face of an idol

For the final coat, a special moulding clay is used

Once the clay dries, idols are covered in white chalk paint

Painting of the eyes — 'Chokkhodaan' — is done on the day of Mahalaya

Time to add ornaments

Ready for 'praan pratishtha'
