Satyajit Ray, India’s most renowned filmmaker, was born on May 2, 1921
Before he started filmmaking, Ray worked in the Kolkata office of DJ Keymer (now Ogilvy) as art director
Pather Panchali was Ray’s debut film, which went on to win 11 international awards
Ray was the first Indian filmmaker to use a teaser advertising campaign for his film before its theatrical release
Ray also designed book covers for Signet Press. His notable covers include those for Jim Corbett’s Man-Eaters of Kumaon and Jawaharlal Nehru's Discovery of India
Ray even created 4 Roman fonts — Ray Roman, Ray Bizarre, Daphnis, Holiday Script
Ray was an author too. He created immensely popular detective character Feluda, also made films on the stories
It was Ray who gave music to the Merchant Ivory film Shakespeare Wallah
After 1961, Ray composed the music for all his films. Their publicity posters were also designed by him
Kanchenjungha (1962) was his first colour film, and first film based on his own story
Ray had been awarded an honorary doctorate by Oxford University
