Karnataka Govt To Remove Hijab Ban: Looking Back At The Row

In 2022, the BJP-led Karnataka government imposed a state-wide hijab ban at educational institutes.

The row started when Muslim students in hijabs were not allowed to enter a college in Udupi.

Karnataka HC also gave an interim order in 2022, restraining students from displaying religious symbols in the classroom.

Congress MLA Kaneez Fatima held protests against the hijab ban.

This ban sparked a nationwide protest. Students were seen protesting against the hijab ban in Delhi, Kolkata, and other cities.

Protesters said that hijab is a Constitutional right.

Members of Muslim community protested in support of hijab in schools at Shaheen Bagh Okhla.

Protests were seen in Kolkata too. Activists took out candle-light marches against the ban.

Protests were also staged in Indonesia in front of the Indian Embassy.

Karnataka Minister BC Nagesh, who was at the forefront of the hijab ban, lost in the 2023 assembly polls.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah scrapped the hijab ban on Dec 23. He said, How you dress and what you eat is your choice.
