Hemant Soren Arrest: Top Points

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren's petition against arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday.

The case was mentioned by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi in front of a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud on Thursday.

Sibal, appearing for Soren, said that they are withdrawing the case from the high court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the case will be heard by the Jharkhand High Court today.

Following his resignation, Soren was arrested by the ED in Ranchi on Wednesday night in an alleged land scam case. A camp jail has been set up in Dayanand Nagar for his detention.

On ED action against Soren, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah believe only in politics of vendetta and political harassment.

On the question on horse trading, Congress party's incharge for Jharkhand, Ghulam Ahmad Mir says, ...there are many MLAs who could be soft targets...For safety reasons, we have kept our MLAs in a safe place.

Soren’s resignation paved the way for his loyalist Champai Soren to potentially take on the role of Chief Minister, as stated by the ruling alliance.

Hours after his arrest, Soren said that he would continue to fight and not beg for compromise.

The ED had been issuing summons to Soren in connection with an alleged money laundering case, and he consistently declined to appear before the agency.

The arrest of the Jharkhand CM concluded days of tension between Soren and the ED, ranging from the agency searching his Delhi residence to his party condemning the agency for maligning his image.
