Atishi will be the third woman to hold the top post in Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.
Atishi is currently the only woman in the Delhi Cabinet and holds the maximum number of portfolios, including Finance, Water, Education, Public Works Department, Power, Revenue, Planning, Services, Law, Justice, Information and Publicity, and Vigilance.
She is also a member of AAP's Political Affairs Committee (PAC).
She graduated from St Stephen's College, Delhi University, with a degree in history. Pursued two Master's courses at Oxford University.
In 2018, just before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, she decided to drop her surname 'Marlena'. NDTV reports that the word 'Marlena' was coined by Atishi's professor father by combining 'Marx' and 'Lenin'.
Atishi spent seven years in a Madhya Pradesh village, where she got involved in organic farming and progressive education systems. She has also worked for several non-profit organisations in MP. She is a strong advocate for environmental issues and subsidised education.
Atishi joined AAP when it was just beginning and served as a key member of the Manifesto Drafting Committee of the party for the 2013 assembly election. She played an important role in shaping the party’s policies in the early stages.
She served as AAP spokesperson for several years before she was elected as an MLA in the 2020 assembly elections.
Atishi, born on June 8, 1981, is the daughter of Delhi University professors Vijay Kumar Singh and Tripta Wahi.
