What Is Chronic Sciatica Pain? Know Exercise And Treatment Options

Sciatica is pain due to the compression of the sciatic nerve.

The pain occurs in the lower spine and the pain radiates in the buttocks/throughout the legs.

The common symptoms of sciatica are: 1. Pain- It is the most common symptom that is felt on the lower back, and buttocks and radiates toward the legs.

2. Muscle Weakness-Sometimes nerve root compression may lead to muscle weakness affecting ankle /great toe (EHL muscle) movements.

3. Tingling/Numbness- Pins and needle sensation, unable to feel sensations on the affected leg. (Affected dermatome)

4. Bladder/bowel problem- In some cases, cauda equina compression may cause bladder/bowel problems also. It is very much important and needs immediate attention.

Regular free-hand exercises, correct posture, maintaining body weight, and avoiding smoking are some measures to prevent sciatica.

It is advisable to undergo clinical examination to diagnose the problem, an MRI may be required.

Furthermore, 70-80% of people get cured with simple medication and lifestyle modifications.

However, it depends upon the underlying pathology and what treatment is suitable for that particular patient.

It is not wise to neglect spine problems; hence a spine doctor’s advice is important.
