This victory marks the first time since 1972 that India has beaten Australia in the hockey competition of the Summer Olympics. Prior to this match, India had already secured a spot in the quarterfinals and, with this win against Australia, finished second in Group B, just behind Belgium. India's last victory over Australia in the Summer Olympics hockey competition was in 1972. After 52 years, Team India has finally ended the drought with a historic 3-2 victory. The achievement was accomplished under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Singh. India dominated the match from the first quarter. Striker Abhishek gave India a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, and just a minute later, Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner into a goal, showcasing India's strength. Harmanpreet then scored the third goal for India on a penalty stroke, and the match concluded with a 3-2 scoreline.
