Middle East conflict: Uncertainty over US–Iran talks in Islamabad as Iran withholds confirmation

Tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate ahead of proposed talks in Islamabad, with uncertainty still surrounding Iran’s participation. While Pakistan is actively preparing to host the second round of negotiations, Iran has not officially confirmed its delegation’s arrival, increasing diplomatic suspense. At the same time, Iran has firmly reiterated that it will not relinquish control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route, warning against any external interference. The situation is further intensified by US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats, warning of severe consequences if a nuclear deal is not reached. Iran has also executed two individuals accused of spying for Israel’s Mossad, signaling a hardening internal security stance. Despite rising tensions, reports suggest a possible extension of the ceasefire with a 90% probability of talks moving forward. However, mutual distrust, military posturing, and conflicting demands continue to push the region closer to deeper instability.
