Political News: Karnataka CM Speculation Intensifies as DK Shivakumar Silent on Chief Minister Questions

Political developments in Karnataka have once again intensified speculation over a possible leadership change in the state government. After a crucial Congress meeting concluded, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar arrived at Karnataka Bhavan in Delhi, where he faced repeated questions from journalists regarding whether he would become the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, he chose not to respond, maintaining silence amid growing political buzz. The renewed discussion around leadership change has revived the long-debated “two-and-a-half-year formula” that was reportedly considered during the formation of the Congress government in 2023. Under that understanding, Siddaramaiah was said to serve as Chief Minister for the first half of the term, followed by DK Shivakumar taking over. However, more than two and a half years into the government’s tenure, the arrangement has not been formally implemented, leading to ongoing internal tensions. The timeline of events highlights the evolving political situation. The Congress secured a majority in Karnataka on 13 May 2023, and Siddaramaiah was sworn in as Chief Minister along with DK Shivakumar as Deputy Chief Minister on 20 May 2023. Since then, periodic discussions and factional differences have surfaced within the party regarding leadership roles. In June 2025, reports suggested increased activity from the Shivakumar camp, with several legislators publicly backing his claim for the top post. This further fueled speculation about a possible transition. Subsequent developments in late 2025 and ongoing discussions in 2026 have kept the issue alive, with renewed talks of leadership change gaining momentum as the government approaches the later phase of its term. While speculation continues, DK Shivakumar has not made any official statement, and Congress leadership has not confirmed any decision regarding a change in Chief Minister. The political situation remains fluid, with all eyes now on Delhi and the party high command for clarity on Karnataka’s leadership future.
