Political Debate: Opposition Questions Priorities but Stops Short of Opposing National Song Directive

The Centre’s newly issued guidelines on rendering Vande Mataram in its full six-stanza form at official events have triggered political discussion across parties. According to the directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the national song will now be performed in its complete version, lasting approximately 3 minutes and 10 seconds. If both Vande Mataram and the national anthem (Jana Gana Mana) are sung at the same function, the national song will precede the anthem, and attendees must stand in an attentive posture. During the debate, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Anurag Bhadauria stated that his party is not opposing the move but questioned whether the government is prioritizing symbolic issues over pressing concerns such as inflation, unemployment, and farmers’ distress. On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Dr. Ajay Alok described the decision as a historic and long-overdue correction. Observers note that while opposition parties are politically critical of the government, none have openly opposed the directive itself, indicating the sensitive and symbolic nature of the national song issue.
