PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana: Over 8 Crore Beneficiaries Received Free Ration Amid Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) provided critical food security to economically vulnerable families across India. Under this scheme, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed free ration to over 8.03 crore beneficiaries, making it the largest food security program in the world—surpassing the population of entire Europe. To ensure effective delivery, the government has focused on digitalization: 100% of ration cards have been digitized, 99.8% of fair price shops are equipped with ePoS devices, and nearly all beneficiaries and ration cards are linked with Aadhaar. Special measures have also been considered for migrant workers, who often face challenges in accessing ration benefits while relocating between districts. Amid this discussion in the Lok Sabha, opposition members raised protests regarding trade deals, leading to suspension of eight MPs. Despite disruptions, the government highlighted the efficiency and reach of PMGKAY in addressing hunger during crises. The scheme continues to provide essential food support and is a model for large-scale social welfare programs.
