MetroPulse: Massive Demolition Drive Begins in Mumbai’s Bandra After Court Orders on Rail Land

A major demolition drive has begun in Mumbai’s Bandra area as authorities move to clear large-scale encroachments from Western Railway land following orders from the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court. Heavy police deployment and multiple bulldozers were brought in to remove illegal structures built dangerously close to railway tracks and public infrastructure. The operation targets unauthorized slums and multi-storey structures constructed over railway property near Bandra railway station. Officials said the demolition campaign comes after nearly nine years of legal proceedings over illegal occupation of railway land that had allegedly obstructed railway expansion and safety projects. Visuals from the site showed several four- and five-storey makeshift buildings made with tin-sheet structures being razed by civic teams. Authorities also identified unauthorized commercial establishments and telecom installations operating from within the encroached zone. According to railway officials, illegal settlements had expanded significantly over the years, creating serious concerns around passenger safety, train movement, and future infrastructure development. The encroachments were reportedly located close to active railway tracks used by Mumbai suburban local trains as well as long-distance trains connecting western and northern India. Railway authorities argued in court that the illegal occupation had made maintenance and modernization work increasingly difficult. The demolition drive is being jointly carried out by Western Railway, Mumbai civic authorities, police teams, and other government agencies under tight security arrangements to prevent unrest during the operation. Officials maintain that the action is strictly based on judicial directions and is aimed at reclaiming public land critical for railway operations and commuter safety. The large-scale anti-encroachment operation is expected to continue in phases as authorities assess the remaining illegal structures across the railway corridor in Mumbai’s suburban belt.
