View In AppThe exit polls have spoken, and the NDA looks set to repeat – if not exceed – its 2019 performance in the Lok Sabha Election 2024. While the results may be similar, the backdrop against which this election was held was quite different from the one in 2019.
One big difference is the massive umbrella alliance – I.N.D.I.A – under which over 25 Opposition parties have sought to put up a united fight against the Modi-led NDA. Fissures and factions apart, the alliance marks a scale of Opposition unity not seen in 2019, when pacts were localised. Speaking of alliances, this is the first Lok Sabha election since 1996 when the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the BJP are not contesting as allies.
In Madhya Pradesh, 2024 marks the first time since 1998 when two former CMs are in the fray for seats in the Lok Sabha (Digvijaya Singh of the Congress and Shivraj Singh Chouhan of the BJP), as reported by The Times of India. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has walked away from former pocket borough Amethi to contest from Raebareli (apart from Kerala’s Wayanad).
