Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years, marking a potential turning point in India-China relations. Arriving in Tianjin for the SCO Summit, Modi received a red-carpet welcome with cultural performances by Chinese artists, highlighting the significance of his visit. Indian expats in China greeted him with chants of "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai," showcasing strong diaspora support. This visit comes amid improving diplomatic signals following tensions caused by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping had earlier written to President Droupadi Murmu, expressing interest in repairing ties. Modi and Xi are expected to hold a key meeting on August 31, followed by a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 1. These engagements could reshape regional dynamics and raise concerns in Washington. Before arriving in China, Modi was in Japan, where he met PM Shigeru Ishiba, toured a semiconductor factory, and rode the Shinkansen bullet train. The visit led to 13 key agreements, and Japan pledged ¥10 trillion investment in India by 2025. Modi was warmly received across Japan, with locals respectfully addressing him as “Modi-san.” Modi’s twin visits to China and Japan reinforce India’s growing influence in Asia and its balancing act between major global powers. As India deepens technological and economic ties with Japan and explores diplomatic resets with China, the trip is being seen as a strategically important move on the global chessboard.
