India Energy Alert: PM Modi’s 7 Appeals Amid Iran-US War Spark Political Clash Nationwide
Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, fears of a wider global energy crisis have intensified as disruptions in West Asia continue to impact crude oil supplies, shipping routes, and international supply chains. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made two appeals within 24 hours, urging citizens to adopt energy conservation measures and reduce unnecessary foreign currency expenditure to safeguard India’s economic stability. The Prime Minister outlined seven key suggestions for the public, including prioritizing work-from-home arrangements wherever possible, postponing gold purchases for one year, reducing petrol and diesel consumption, and increasing the use of public transport such as metros, buses, and local trains. He also appealed for limited use of edible oils, reduced dependency on chemical fertilizers by promoting natural farming, greater adoption of indigenous products over foreign brands, and avoidance of non-essential international travel, including foreign tourism and destination weddings. The government stated that these steps are intended to protect India from external economic shocks, especially rising crude oil prices and global inflationary pressures triggered by the ongoing conflict. Officials also emphasized that India currently maintains sufficient reserves of crude oil, natural gas, and LPG, and there is no immediate shortage situation in the country. However, the opposition has strongly criticized the appeals, alleging that the government is shifting responsibility for economic challenges onto citizens. Political leaders claimed that such advisories could negatively impact sectors like gold trade, tourism, automobiles, and retail industries. Despite political sparring, the government maintains that the measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring long-term economic resilience. Authorities have urged citizens not to panic, stressing that India is better positioned than many countries facing direct disruptions from the West Asia conflict.
