DUBAI-TEL AVIV FLIGHT: New Probe Details Emerge on Co-Pilot Hamam Al-Hammami Attack
A deeper investigation into the September 30 incident aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv is bringing fresh scrutiny to the background of Omani co-pilot Hamam Al-Hammami. The flight reportedly faced a serious cockpit incident after Captain Smit Machchhar was allegedly attacked during the journey, forcing the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia. Investigators are now examining claims concerning Al-Hammami’s previous employment, background and alleged extremist associations. Reports have referred to material allegedly found on his social-media accounts, including images associated with former Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and a suicide bomber involved in a 2009 attack in Afghanistan. These reported findings are being examined by investigators and should not be treated as proof of an organisational connection unless established by authorities. Questions have also emerged about Al-Hammami’s professional history. Reports indicate that he previously worked with Oman Air for several years before leaving in February 2025, later joining Royal Air Maroc and subsequently Flydubai in 2026. His reported career history has become an important part of the investigation because authorities are examining how he passed the recruitment and security procedures required for aviation employment. The inquiry is also looking into allegations that concerns about his conduct or ideology had previously surfaced in Oman. The most significant unanswered issue remains what motivated the alleged cockpit attack and whether it was an individual act or connected to a wider extremist network. Investigators are expected to examine digital evidence, employment records, witness accounts and events inside the cockpit to establish the sequence of the incident. While several serious claims have emerged through media reports, the investigation is still ongoing and a final determination about motive or organisational links has not been established.
