BREAKING: Zojila Tunnel Achieves Major Breakthrough as Both Ends Connect in Historic Milestone

A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of the Zojila Tunnel, one of India’s most ambitious and high-altitude infrastructure projects, as the eastern and western ends of the tunnel have been successfully connected. The breakthrough marks a critical phase in the development of a tunnel designed to provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The 13.15-kilometre-long tunnel, being constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹6,800 crore, is located on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway, a route that remains closed for several months each year due to heavy snowfall, extreme weather conditions, and avalanche risks. Once operational, the tunnel is expected to ensure uninterrupted movement of people, goods, and essential services between the two strategically important regions. Officials associated with the project confirmed that tunnel boring operations from both sides have now been completed after years of continuous excavation work carried out under extremely challenging geological and climatic conditions. The project involved advanced tunneling technology, including tunnel boring machines, ventilation shafts, and high-altitude engineering solutions. The next phase of construction will focus on finishing works such as road surfacing, structural reinforcement, installation of ventilation and safety systems, and integration of emergency response infrastructure. According to project updates, nearly 69 percent of the total work has been completed so far, and the remaining construction is expected to be finished over the next 18 months. Once fully completed, the Zojila Tunnel is expected to drastically reduce travel time, improve year-round connectivity, boost economic activity, and strengthen strategic mobility in the Himalayan region. It is being regarded as one of the most complex and significant infrastructure projects undertaken in India’s recent history, showcasing modern engineering capabilities in extreme terrain conditions.
