Kaun Jitega 2019: Congress and BJP's blame game over emergency continues
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Congress party's mentality hadn't changed since the Emergency years, pointing to a recent attempt made by opposition parties to have Chief Justice Dipak Misra impeached.
Arun Jaitley, a top Modi government minister, compared the imposition of Emergency in India with Adolf Hilter's efforts to acquire "emergency powers" in 1933 (a reference to what's known as the Reichstag Fire Decree).
For the Congress leader Anand Sharma, the comparison was "absurd, outrageous and a distortion of history".
"Dictators do not hold elections. Let BJP be reminded that Indira Gandhi lifted emergency to hold free and fair elections. She herself lost and she accepted defeat, and the verdict, with humility."
