Rajasthan: 10-Year-Old Cancer Patient Admitted To Jaipur Hospital Dies Of 'Rat Bite'
After noticing the blood oozing from the boy's toe, the family quickly alerted the nursing staff.
A 10-year-old boy died after he was allegedly bitten by a rat at a government hospital where he was undergoing cancer treatment in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
According to a PTI report, the boy was admitted to the State Cancer Institute on December 11.
The family heard the boy’s cry and when they removed the blanket he was lying under they spotted blood oozing from one of his toes and a rat running away, as per The Times Of India (TOI).
The boy’s family quickly alerted the nursing staff who applied first aid and bandaged the toe.
The State Cancer Institute said that the boy’s death was caused by "septicaemia shock and high infection" and not a rat bite. The Rajasthan government has constituted a committee to probe the matter.
Hospital superintendent Dr Sandeep Jasuja said, that the boy had a fever and pneumonia. “He died due to high infection septicaemia shock on Friday", as per PTI.
He added that the hospital treated the child as soon as they received information about that rat bite. Adding that, there are directives sent to ensure cleanliness on the hospital premises.
Meanwhile, Medical education secretary Ambrish Kumar has sought a report from the principal of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College which is associated with the State Cancer Institute, according to a PTI report.
According to the TOI report, the probe committee formed by the government consists of Mukesh Kumar Meena, additional director (hospital administration), Rajasthan Medical Education Society (RAJMES), Dr Rakesh Karnani, deputy director (academics), and Dr Vandana Sharma, deputy director (hospital administration), both from RAJMES.
A similar incident occurred earlier this year when a 30-year-old patient who had been admitted to the ICU of Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) died while undergoing treatment. The patient’s relatives claimed that rat bites were visible at two to three places on his body and most likely occurred late night.
