One child from Mahisagar district is on ventilator support, while five children are receiving treatment at Godhra Civil Hospital after their samples were collected for testing. Four of them are in stable condition and awaiting their reports.

Three other patients from Panchmahal are undergoing treatment at SSG Hospital in Vadodara and are reported to be in stable condition. Their test results are also awaited. Another child has been discharged from hospital.

Paediatrician Ashish Jain of Himmatnagar Civil Hospital said nine new patients were admitted between June 26 and July 13. Of these, six children died, one recovered and was discharged, while one of the two remaining hospitalised patients tested negative.

The Gujarat Health Department has appealed to the public not to panic over rumours or misinformation related to the virus circulating on social media.

The 2027 Punjab Assembly election is shaping up as a direct contest between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the principal opposition Congress, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the declining Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) playing supporting roles. A key element of the BJP’s Punjab outreach is its conscious effort to broaden its appeal among Sikh voters. The party has been inducting prominent Sikh faces — leaders who emphasise religious sensitivities, community pride, and Punjab’s unique ethos while avoiding overtly hardline positions that could alienate the devout Sikh population. This calibrated approach aims to neutralise historical baggage from the farm laws and project the BJP as a party sensitive to Sikh institutions and aspirations. Simultaneously, BJP strategists are actively courting disgruntled elements within AAP, particularly MLAs and local leaders frustrated with Bhagwant Mann’s governance style, internal party dynamics, or delayed schemes. Pre-poll defections or post-poll support could prove decisive in a fragmented verdict.

Though its influence remains limited in the rural heartlands of Malwa and Majha, where agrarian and Sikh identity issues dominate, the BJP is making steady inroads in urban centres and among trading communities, youth, and sections concerned about security and narcotics. Its sharp focus on AAP’s governance failures — rising crime, drug menace, youth unemployment, and perceived soft-peddling on radical elements — allows it to position itself as a credible alternative on law and order and development. Issues like alleged conversions and border security are also being highlighted to consolidate Hindu and urban Sikh support.

The Road to 2027

Jaipur: Southwest monsoon is expected to weaken over Rajasthan from Friday, bringing a pause to the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall in the state, the Meteorological Department said.

According to the department, weak monsoon conditions are likely to prevail across the state from July 10-11 and continue for about a week. During this period, weather is expected to remain largely dry over most parts of Rajasthan, with only isolated places likely to receive light rainfall.

Meanwhile, during the 24-hour period ending Friday morning, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds was recorded at isolated places in the state.

The highest rainfall of 56 mm was recorded at Kekri in Ajmer district.

Other rainfall recorded during the period included 3 cm each at Anta in Baran district, Bansur in Alwar district and Churu, while Laxmangarh in Sikar district received 2 cm of rain.

Jammu: Army officials defused an old, unexploded mortar shell found in an agricultural field in the forward area of Poonch district on Thursday, after villagers noticed the shell while harvesting maize in Kussalian village and subsequently alerted authorities, officials said.

"We were harvesting maize in our field when we suddenly spotted an old, unexploded bomb. We didn't touch it. Instead, we immediately informed the nearby Army unit. They are on their way now to defuse it as soon as possible," resident Pardeep Kumar said.

Officials said police and Army personnel reached the spot soon after receiving the information and secured the area before the bomb disposal squad began safely defusing the mortar shell.

No casualties or property damage were reported.

Officials said the unexploded shell is believed to be a remnant of past cross-border shelling in the border district.

Banda (UP), Jul 9 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the SP and the Congress of insulting Sanatan traditions and opposing the development of major Hindu religious sites like the Ayodhya Ram temple, saying they were "fond of graveyards".

Some political parties have made it their "sole objective" to demean Hindu traditions and Sanatan Dharma and don't want India to emerge as a prosperous and developed nation, he said addressing a public gathering here after inaugurating and laying foundation stone of 229 development projects costing Rs 710 crore in Banda and Baberu assembly constituencies and distribution of appointment letters.

Targeting the previous SP government, Adityanath alleged that funds meant for heritage conservation were utilised differently during its tenure.

"The difference is that after the BJP came to power, the money is being spent on the development and beautification of temples. During the Samajwadi Party government, the same funds were spent on building boundary walls of graveyards," he claimed.

The chief minister further alleged that the opposition SP and Congress opposed the development of religious sites because of their political approach.

"They are fond of graveyards, and that is why they oppose the development of the Ram Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Vindhyavasini Dham, Naimisharanya and Chitrakoot Dham. They also oppose the efforts of public representatives towards the development of these places," he said.

"There are people who insult our heritage. Some have made it the sole purpose of their lives to insult Hindu traditions and Sanatan Dharma. They do not want to see India become prosperous and developed," the chief minister said.

He alleged that such parties were uncomfortable with the development of prominent religious centres across the country.

"They do not like the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya. They do not like the Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. They do not like the magnificent Vindhyavasini Dham in Mirzapur. They do not appreciate the efforts being made for the development and beautification of Chitrakoot, nor do they support the beautification and development of temples," Adityanath said.

His remarks come at a time when the opposition has been targeting the BJP government over the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ayodhya Ram temple.

The chief minister asserted that the preservation and promotion of India's heritage had gained momentum under the BJP governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh.

"Today, if India's heritage is being preserved, it is because there is a double-engine BJP government," he said.

He said those who insult India's heritage, harbour a negative mindset and oppose development should be rejected outright.

"Looking at the present circumstances and keeping the country's future in mind, we must act with complete commitment and resolve against such forces," the chief minister said.

RWA Raises Concerns Over Structural Safety

"This is a deeply alarming incident. Although the flat was unoccupied, the falling debris could have seriously injured residents passing below. The rainfall led to severe waterlogging and traffic congestion across several major roads. Vehicular movement slowed significantly along the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur, Basai, Kadipur and Sohna Road, with several vehicles reportedly breaking down in flooded stretches.

Residents also reported other rain-related incidents. A cyclist allegedly fell into a pit dug for a sewer line in Feroze Gandhi Colony, while a cow was injured after slipping into another excavation site on Wednesday. In a separate incident, a school bus became stuck on a dug-up stretch in Rajendra Park, according to locals.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the entire national capital, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next few hours as relentless showers continue to batter Delhi-NCR.

According to the weather department, moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely across several parts of Delhi until around 1:15 pm, prompting authorities to advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from waterlogged areas.

The warning comes after overnight rain continued into Thursday morning, inundating roads across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram, disrupting traffic and affecting daily life in several parts of the National Capital Region.

IMD Issues Red Alert for Delhi, Orange Alert Across NCR

The IMD placed all districts of Delhi under a red alert on Thursday morning, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Neighbouring districts, including Noida (Gautam Buddh Nagar), Ghaziabad, Meerut and Gurugram, remain under an orange alert, with more intense spells of rain expected through the day.

The weather department has forecast continued rainfall across Delhi-NCR over the coming days and has urged people to monitor official advisories, avoid unnecessary movement and remain cautious in areas prone to waterlogging and traffic congestion.

Waterlogging Brings Traffic to a Crawl

Persistent rainfall has caused severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across several parts of Delhi-NCR, with Gurugram among the worst-affected areas.

Many private companies in Gurugram reportedly advised employees to work from home as key roads remained submerged and traffic moved at a crawl.

Major stretches affected include the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur, Basai, Kadipur and Sohna Road. Several vehicles reportedly broke down after being stranded in waterlogged areas, causing long delays for commuters.

Authorities said teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), police and other agencies have been deployed to drain water and regulate traffic. Waterlogging has also been reported from Sectors 31 and 39, Sheetla Mata Mandir Road, Sector 10A, Pataudi Road, Basai Road, Kadipur and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk.

Mehrauli, Ghaziabad Record Highest Rainfall

According to IMD data, several locations across Delhi and the NCR recorded significant rainfall between 8:30 am on July 8 and 6 am on July 9.

In Delhi, Mehrauli recorded the highest rainfall at 83 mm, followed by Lodi Road (79 mm), Pusa (73 mm), Chhatarpur (68 mm), Mayur Vihar (66 mm), Janakpuri (62 mm), Narayana (57 mm), Pragati Maidan (46 mm), Najafgarh (42 mm), Mungeshpur (40 mm), Jharoda Kalan (33 mm) and Jafarpur (6 mm).

Across the NCR, Kamla Nehru Nagar in Ghaziabad received the highest rainfall at 143 mm, while Hindon recorded 53 mm. Gurugram received comparatively lower rainfall, with North CAP University recording 27 mm and KVK 21 mm during the same period.

Authorities Advise Residents to Stay Alert

With more rain forecast through the day, authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through waterlogged stretches where traffic disruptions are expected to continue.

The IMD has warned that the ongoing spell of heavy rain could lead to further water accumulation in low-lying areas, affecting road traffic and daily commuting across Delhi and neighbouring NCR cities.
