UP Storm Havoc Kills 56 As Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm Batters State; Prayagraj Worst Hit

A powerful storm system accompanied by heavy rain, dust storms and lightning swept across several districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, leaving at least 56 people dead and many others injured in one of the state’s deadliest spells of extreme weather this season.

The devastation was reported from multiple districts, including Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Chandauli, Sonbhadra and Badaun. Officials said rescue and relief operations were launched soon after the storm struck the affected regions.

Prayagraj emerged as the worst-hit district, with authorities officially confirming 16 deaths. Fatalities were also reported from Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Badaun, Chandauli and Sonbhadra as strong winds and intense rainfall caused widespread destruction across the state.

Prayagraj Reports Highest Casualties

In Prayagraj alone, officials said the storm claimed the lives of women, children and men across several areas of the district.

According to district authorities, the deaths included five women, four children and eight men. The worst-affected regions included Handia, where seven people died, followed by Phulpur with four deaths, Soraon with three and Meja with two. One fatality was also reported from the Sadar area.

Officials said five other people suffered injuries during the storm, while significant damage to property and livestock was also recorded. Authorities reported the loss of 20 animals and damage to at least 16 houses due to the severe weather conditions.

Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Vineeta Singh said officials were still collecting detailed information from different tehsils, indicating that the number of casualties in Prayagraj could rise further.

State Government Yet To Release Consolidated Toll

The Uttar Pradesh government has not yet issued a consolidated statewide death toll linked to the storm and rain-related incidents.

A senior state government official said authorities were still gathering reports from affected districts before announcing compensation measures for victims’ families.

“We are in the process of collecting figures, and after that, the state government will announce compensation accordingly,” the official said.

The widespread destruction has once again raised concerns over the increasing impact of sudden extreme weather events across several parts of north India during the summer season.

CM Yogi Orders Immediate Relief And Compensation

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster and directed officials across departments to visit affected areas and ensure immediate assistance to victims.

The chief minister also instructed authorities to provide compensation to people affected by unseasonal rain, storms and lightning strikes across Uttar Pradesh.

In a statement, the Chief Minister’s Office said Yogi had ordered officials to complete relief distribution work within 24 hours and ensure that all affected families receive necessary support without delay.

Over 500 Flights Delayed As Sudden Storm, Rain And Hail Lash Delhi

Delhi witnessed a dramatic change in weather on Wednesday evening as powerful winds, intense localised rainfall and hailstorms swept across parts of the capital, disrupting normal life and severely affecting flight operations.

Strong winds reaching speeds of nearly 100km/hr lashed several areas, while heavy showers and hail were reported in parts of south and south-west Delhi. The sudden storm system caused widespread disruption at the airport, with officials confirming that more than 500 flights were delayed, 15 diverted, and six forced to carry out “go-arounds” because of adverse weather conditions, according to Hindustan Times.

The severe weather activity was triggered by soaring daytime temperatures combined with moisture linked to an active western disturbance, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Palam recorded the highest wind speed at 98km/hr, while Safdarjung and Pusa registered gusts of 72km/hr.

Sudden Weather Shift Brings Sharp Temperature Drop

The capital had earlier experienced brief drizzle and gusty winds during the day, offering temporary relief from the intense heat. However, rising humidity levels and strong sunshine later pushed the “feels like” temperature close to 44 degrees Celsius by evening, despite the actual maximum temperature staying below 40 degrees Celsius.

By around 8 pm, conditions deteriorated rapidly across the city. The IMD subsequently issued an orange alert for several parts of Delhi, including north, south-west, south and south-east districts, warning residents about severe weather conditions.

“We had extremely strong winds, touching 98km/hr. There was also a dip in temperature after 8pm across most parts of the city by 10-11 degrees,” an IMD official said.

The sharp fall in temperature brought temporary respite from the oppressive heat, but the stormy conditions also created hazardous situations in several areas.

Residents reported hailstorm activity in multiple neighbourhoods, especially across south and south-west Delhi. Areas including Dhaula Kuan, Moti Bagh and Uttam Nagar witnessed hail accompanied by strong winds and rain.

Rainfall figures remained relatively modest despite the intensity of the storm system. Till 8.30 pm, Palam recorded 2 mm of rainfall, while Safdarjung received 1.8 mm, according to IMD data.

Even so, the sudden weather shift left many residents surprised, particularly after a day dominated by humid conditions and scorching heat.

The IMD has indicated that the brief spell of stormy weather is unlikely to continue beyond Wednesday night.

Officials said dry westerly to northwesterly winds are expected to return from Thursday onwards, leading to a steady increase in temperatures across Delhi and other parts of northwest India over the coming days.

“No rain is expected from Thursday, so there will be a gradual rise in temperature across northwest India over the next seven days, including over Delhi, where it can rise by 3-4 degrees,” an IMD official said.

The weather department has forecast that Delhi’s maximum temperature could climb to nearly 42 degrees Celsius by Sunday as heat conditions intensify once again.

The Civil Hospital on Wednesday responded to the speculation surrounding the death of Prateek Yadav, the younger son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 38. Following the demise of Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav's stepbrother, reports emerged hinting that Prateek died after being poisoned.

Civil Hospital director Dr G.C. Gupta said Prateek was brought to the hospital in a dead condition. “We followed all necessary procedures and informed senior officials and the police after confirming the death,” he said.

Speaking to ABP News, Gupta ruled out the possibility of poisoning, saying that no evidence backing the speculation has emerged so far. He clarified that neither he nor the hospital had shared any such information with anyone. The hospital administration firmly denied rumours claiming Prateek Yadav had been poisoned.

Medical Team Was Sent To His Residence

According to Dr Gupta, around 5.30 am, a driver from Prateek Yadav’s residence arrived at the hospital seeking urgent medical assistance. Following the request, a medical officer was immediately sent to the house.

Prateek was then brought to Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. When asked about reports claiming he was found unconscious in the kitchen, Dr Gupta said several versions were circulating but added that nothing could be confirmed at this stage.

The exact cause of death is yet to be officially established and is expected to become clearer after the post-mortem examination.

Prateek Was Earlier Hospitalised In April

Sources said Prateek Yadav had also been admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow on April 30 in critical condition. His health reportedly improved slightly after three days of treatment.

However, he allegedly returned home without informing doctors. According to sources, Prateek had been suffering from pulmonary embolism, a serious lung condition in which blood clots block arteries in the lungs.

The condition can severely disrupt blood circulation and may become life-threatening if complications intensify. Sources said he had been battling the illness for some time before his death.

BJP And SP Suspend Political Activities

Following Prateek Yadav’s sudden demise, both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party cancelled their political programmes scheduled across Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

The BJP announced that district-level protests planned by women workers across the state had been postponed. In a statement, Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary said the programmes were deferred in view of the untimely death of Aparna Yadav’s husband.

The Samajwadi Party also cancelled all political engagements planned for the day as leaders across party lines expressed condolences over Prateek Yadav’s passing.

Akhilesh Yadav Mourns Half-Brother Prateek’s Death, Hints At Financial Stress Behind Tragedy

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of his half-brother Prateek Yadav, who passed away in Lucknow at the age of 38.

Prateek, the younger son of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and his second wife Sadhna Gupta, was reportedly suffering from a serious lung-related illness for a long time before his death. Sources said he had been battling complications linked to blood clotting in the lungs and his condition had remained critical for some time.

Taking to social media, Akhilesh Yadav shared a photograph of Prateek and wrote: “The demise of Shri Pratik Yadav ji is extremely heartbreaking! May God grant peace to the departed soul.” The Samajwadi Party also paid tribute in a separate post, calling his death deeply saddening.

Prateek Was Taken To Hospital Early Morning

According to people present at the hospital, Prateek Yadav was rushed to Lucknow’s Civil Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Some youths accompanying him said he was brought to the hospital around 5.10 am and was officially declared dead around 6 am.

Hospital officials later shifted his body to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) for post-mortem examination. Doctors said the exact cause of death would only be confirmed after the autopsy report.

Dr Gupta, who spoke to PTI, said an Emergency Medical Officer had gone to Prateek’s residence after a driver from the house arrived at the hospital seeking urgent medical assistance around 5.30 am. He said Prateek was then brought to the hospital by the medical team.

Akhilesh Spoke About His Brother’s Struggles

While speaking to the media, Akhilesh Yadav said the family was deeply saddened by the loss. He also referred to financial difficulties and Prateek’s long-standing focus on improving his health and building an independent life.

Despite belonging to one of Uttar Pradesh’s most influential political families, Prateek Yadav largely stayed away from active politics and maintained a relatively low public profile.

Fitness Enthusiast And Animal Lover

Prateek Yadav was known among close associates as a fitness enthusiast and an animal lover. He was associated with several animal welfare efforts and reportedly supported multiple shelters.

His wife, Aparna Bisht Yadav, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and currently serves as the vice chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission.

Responding to questions regarding reports of suspected poisoning, Dr Gupta urged caution and said no conclusion should be drawn before the post-mortem findings are available. “Only a postmortem would confirm the exact cause of death,” he said.
