Lucknow has reported its first swine flu death of the season after a 50-year-old woman from Indiranagar died while undergoing treatment at Balrampur Hospital on Thursday.

The woman had developed cold, fever and breathing difficulties a few days before her death. Her family initially took her to a private hospital, where doctors advised a swine flu test after assessing her symptoms.

A private pathology laboratory confirmed the infection in a report dated August 24. Doctors subsequently advised the family to take her to a higher medical centre. She was admitted to Balrampur Hospital on August 25.

According to the details available, the woman’s breathing difficulties continued to worsen after she was admitted. As her condition became critical, doctors placed her on oxygen support and life-saving equipment.

She died at around 2:30 pm on Thursday. It was only after her death that the family showed doctors the swine flu-positive report on a mobile phone.

The report prompted concern among hospital authorities. As a precautionary measure, samples were collected from patients admitted near the woman and sent for testing.

Samples Of 17 Doctors And Staff Sent To KGMU

Samples from 17 doctors and healthcare workers involved in the woman’s treatment, along with some patients, have been sent to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) for testing.

Doctors and staff members who treated the woman have also been advised to remain in isolation as a precaution.

The development has prompted the health department to begin gathering further information about the case and assessing the possibility of exposure among people who may have come into contact with the woman.

Health Department To Verify Swine Flu Diagnosis

Chief Medical Officer Dr NB Singh said officials were trying to establish which test was used to confirm the woman’s swine flu infection.

According to Singh, an ELISA test report is required for confirmation of the infection. The health department is now collecting details related to the diagnosis and the woman’s treatment.

Officials will also trace people who came into contact with the woman. The health department team will seek information about places she visited in recent days and identify people she may have interacted with.

Family Members Advised To Stay In Isolation

Other members of the woman’s family have been advised to remain in isolation for the time being. The health department has also provided them with necessary medicines and asked them to take precautions.

A shocking incident has come to light from Pune’s Warje-Malwadi area, where a 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his father following a dispute over his demand for non-vegetarian food during the Shravan month.

The deceased, identified as Mahesh Bhagwat Gaikwad, allegedly returned home in an intoxicated state and insisted that his family prepare mutton kalvan, a meat-based curry.

The argument reportedly escalated after his family told him that they were not cooking non-vegetarian food because of Shravan. Police allege that Mahesh’s father then attacked him repeatedly on the head and face, resulting in his death.

Case Filed On Brother’s Complaint

The incident reportedly took place between around 10:30 pm on August 24 and 4 am on August 25 in the Ramnagar area of Warje-Malwadi. Mahesh’s brother later approached the police, following which a case was registered at the Warje-Malwadi police station.

Police have arrested Mahesh’s father, Bhagwat Suryabhan Gaikwad, 64, and his mother, Parvati Bhagwat Gaikwad, 60, in connection with the case.

According to police, Mahesh struggled with alcohol addiction and did not have a job. He would frequently return to his parents’ home after drinking alcohol to have his meals, and his drinking and demands for non-vegetarian food often led to arguments with his father.

Father-Son Dispute Escalates Over Mutton Curry

Police said Mahesh arrived at his parents’ home drunk on the night of August 24 and insisted that mutton kalvan be prepared. However, his family told him that non-vegetarian food was not being cooked during Shravan.

Despite being told about the family’s decision, Mahesh allegedly continued to insist on his demand. The disagreement soon turned into a heated argument between him and his father.

The father allegedly assaulted Mahesh on his face and head in anger. The injuries sustained during the assault proved fatal, according to police.

Mother Also Arrested Over Alleged Cover-Up

She has also been accused of destroying evidence linked to the incident. Police therefore named her as an accused in the case and arrested her along with her husband.

Mahesh had married around 10 years ago, but his alcohol addiction and lack of employment reportedly led to his wife leaving with their two children to her parental home. The couple later divorced. Mahesh had subsequently been living alone and would visit his parents’ house for food.

The Warje-Malwadi police are continuing their investigation, while the arrested couple are being questioned.

Bagaha is a major town and subdivisional headquarters located on the banks of the Gandak River in Bihar's West Champaran district. Following the devastation caused by the flash floods in Nepal, people living close to the river in Bagaha have remained vigilant and are closely monitoring the situation.

A local resident, Balkhandeep Mukhiya, told IANS, "It was a night of fear. The entire village was worried, and we were anxious throughout the night about what would happen. Everyone was worried, and we were also concerned. We could not sleep the whole night and remained restless."

"Right now, the situation seems normal, but we are still scared as the situation can change anytime," another local resident said.

"The entire village was awake the entire night. We are very scared. We don't know what we can do," another resident said, reflecting the anxiety among people living near the river.

Another resident said authorities have established medical camps and shelters as precautionary measures to remain prepared for any possible emergency.

"We hope everything remains fine. The situation there (Nepal) is devastating. We are also scared," the resident told IANS.

Amid the severe flooding and widespread destruction in Nepal, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary visited Valmikinagar on Thursday and inspected the Gandak Barrage located along the Indo-Nepal border.

During his visit, he reviewed the condition of the barrage's various sluice gates and assessed the current water level of the Gandak River.

Officials from the Water Resources Department briefed the Chief Minister about the prevailing condition of the river, the possible impact of the floods in Nepal and the preparedness measures put in place by the administration to deal with any emerging situation.

Bagaha SDM Chandni Kumari and SP Rajesh Kumar also briefed Choudhary about the situation in the border areas and the administration's preparedness to respond to any potential threat.

With Raksha Bandhan just a day away, sweet shops across Delhi are facing a familiar festive dilemma: whether to pass rising input costs on to customers or absorb them to protect sales.

A sharp increase in wholesale sugar prices has added to the pressure on sweet makers, who are already dealing with higher costs for milk, cheese, dry fruits, vegetable oil, ghee and commercial cooking gas. While some Delhi traders have raised prices, others are keeping rates unchanged until the festival to avoid putting additional pressure on customers.

Traders told ABP Live that the impact of the higher costs is already being felt in festive orders, with some reporting weaker pre-bookings compared with usual levels.

Sugar Prices Jump To Nearly Rs 7,000 Per Quintal

According to sweetmeat traders, wholesale sugar that was available at around Rs 4,900 per quintal until recently has risen to between Rs 6,600 and nearly Rs 7,000 per quintal.

The sudden increase has added directly to the cost of making sweets at a time when demand typically rises ahead of Raksha Bandhan.

For sweet shops, however, passing the entire increase on to customers is not straightforward. Traders said consumers are already dealing with higher household expenses, making them cautious about festive purchases.

Some Delhi Shops Have Raised Prices

Rahul Agarwal, owner of Agarwal Sweet Center in Janakpuri, West Delhi, said the rise in sugar prices had come on top of increases in several other costs.

He told ABP Live that commercial LPG cylinders, refined flour, vegetable oil and desi ghee had also become more expensive. His shop has consequently increased sweet prices by around Rs 20 per kg.

At the Janakpuri outlet, kaju barfi is currently priced at Rs 1,000 per kg, while kaju roll costs Rs 1,100 per kg. Varieties such as kaju chocolate barfi, kaju kesar and kaju rose are priced at around Rs 1,200 per kg.

Chocolate rolls and some speciality sweets are available at around Rs 600 per kg, while lachha dry-fruit laddus cost Rs 740 per kg and dry-fruit laddus can cost up to Rs 1,200 per kg. Dalda motichoor laddus are priced at Rs 300 per kg, while desi ghee laddus and patisa are around Rs 500 per kg.

Among the milk-based offerings, rasmalai is priced at Rs 45 per piece and rabri rasmalai at Rs 55. Rasgulla costs Rs 25 per piece and rajbhog Rs 35.

Chocolate barfi and special kalakand are priced at around Rs 600 per kg, while milk cake and doda barfi cost Rs 520. Chana barfi is Rs 640, pista barfi Rs 580 and plain barfi Rs 560 per kg.

Other Shops Are Absorbing The Higher Costs

Not all traders have followed the same approach.

A wholesale and retail sweets trader in Uttam Nagar, West Delhi, who did not wish to be identified, told ABP Live that his business had decided against another price increase for now.

The trader said the business has spent more than 35 years building customer trust around quality and reasonable pricing. Raising rates immediately before Raksha Bandhan, he said, would not be appropriate.

The shop had earlier raised prices by around 8-10 per cent following an increase in commercial cylinder prices. Although there had been plans to reduce prices after costs eased, the subsequent increase in sugar prices changed the situation.

For now, the business plans to hold prices until the festival and review the market over the next 10-15 days. Sweets made with vegetable ghee are currently selling for around Rs 250-Rs 300 per kg, while those made with pure desi ghee cost approximately Rs 500-Rs 600 per kg.

Bikaner Mithai Wala Also Holds Prices

Dinesh Agarwal, owner of Bikaner Mithai Wala, has also decided against an immediate price increase.

Speaking about the business, which has been operating for more than two decades, Agarwal said a sudden increase during Raksha Bandhan could affect customer confidence.

He said the business had previously adjusted prices following changes in commercial cylinder costs and had reduced them when those costs eased. This time, the shop is absorbing some of the additional sugar expense.

Any decision to change prices will depend on how raw material costs and market conditions develop.

Some Traders Have Increased Rates By 10-12%

While some businesses are holding the line, others have already passed on higher production costs.

Sahil, a wholesale and retail sweets dealer in West Delhi, told ABP Live that his shop had increased prices across almost its entire range by 10-12 per cent.

He said the higher costs are being reflected even at the production stage, leaving retailers with little choice but to pass some of the increase on to wholesale and retail buyers.

The trader said the effect of the higher prices on sales will become clearer only after the festival.

Customers Are Rethinking Their Festive Budgets

The price increase is also changing how some consumers are approaching Raksha Bandhan shopping.

According to traders, pre-orders for the festival are down by nearly 10 per cent. They estimate current business at around 80-85 per cent of normal levels.

Demand remains relatively strong for kaju katli, dry sweets, barfi and sonpapdi. However, customers are increasingly reassessing how much they want to spend.

Traders said a budget of Rs 500 that previously bought a certain quantity of sweets may now require Rs 650-Rs 700 for a similar purchase.

Some customers are also turning to chocolate gift packs as an alternative. Products such as Cadbury Celebrations, Dairy Milk, KitKat and Ferrero Rocher are among the options being purchased for gifting, although traditional sweets continue to see demand around Raksha Bandhan.

Customers Say Festive Inflation Is Straining Budgets

Nisha, a customer who was shopping for sweets, told ABP Live that she understood why prices had increased following the rise in sugar costs but said the additional expense was affecting household budgets.

She said sweets remain an important part of Raksha Bandhan celebrations and therefore are difficult to avoid altogether, even when prices rise. She also called for greater monitoring of prices of essential commodities during the festive period.

Another customer, Gagan Sharma, said the increase had disrupted the budget he had set aside for Raksha Bandhan purchases. He said his family traditionally buys sweets for the occasion and that higher prices were adding to the financial pressure.

He also called for action against traders involved in hoarding, while blaming the government for failing to prevent the sudden rise in sugar prices.

Sweet Prices Could Be Reassessed After Raksha Bandhan

For now, Delhi's sweet market remains divided between traders willing to absorb higher costs and those who have already revised their prices.

The next move will depend largely on how sugar and other raw material prices behave and how festive demand develops after Raksha Bandhan.

Traders who have frozen their prices have indicated that they may reconsider their rates after the festival if input costs remain elevated. For consumers, that means the current prices at sweet shops may not necessarily remain unchanged in the weeks ahead.

Raipur: The Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), a state-run agriculture university in Raipur, has approached the police over allegations that another BSc Agriculture examination paper was leaked, officials said.

The latest complaint concerns the APB-5121 (Fundamentals of Genetics) paper, which was conducted on August 19 across 28 agricultural colleges. The university has sought an investigation after an initial internal examination reportedly found indications of tampering in envelopes containing examination papers.

The development comes shortly after two other BSc Agriculture examinations were cancelled following allegations that their question papers had been leaked.

IGKV Seeks Police Investigation Into Latest Paper Leak

Following the report, the university formed a five-member committee to look into the allegations and determine whether there was any evidence supporting the reported leak.

The committee examined envelopes containing question papers that had earlier been dispatched to an agricultural college and later returned to the university.

Inquiry Finds Prima Facie Signs of Envelope Tampering

During its preliminary examination, the committee reportedly found signs suggesting that some of the envelopes had been tampered with. The university said the condition of the envelopes, including the one containing the Fundamentals of Genetics paper, appeared similar to those involved in an earlier alleged paper leak case that had already been investigated by police.

The university subsequently forwarded the relevant material to the police for further examination.

Copies of the newspaper report, the PDF carrying the allegedly leaked questions and answers, the original question paper and the internal inquiry committee's report have been submitted to Telibandha police.

Police have confirmed receipt of the complaint.

A police official said, "A complaint has been received, and the matter is being investigated."

Another BSc Agriculture Exam Leak Case Under Probe

Delhi LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu Directs Officials To Tackle Waterlogging On War Footing

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Delhi Lt Governor (LG) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday said he has directed senior officers to treat waterlogging in the national capital as a "disaster" and mount a war-footing response.

The LG, who held a meeting with senior officers to review the situation late Tuesday evening, called for a whole-of-government approach and asked departmental and agency heads to remain present on the ground to ensure swift redressal of citizens' complaints.

The directions came after several weather stations in Delhi recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, leaving roads waterlogged and traffic gridlocked. Tuesday was the capital's wettest August day in two years.

"Directed that the situation be treated as a disaster requiring a war-footing response, with a 'whole of government' approach and every department and agency working in complete synergy rather than in silos," Sandhu said in a post on X on Wednesday.

He asked officials to prioritise real-time redressal of complaints raised through the media, social media and other platforms and stressed continuous monitoring to ensure directions are implemented and visible results delivered on the ground.

"Our priority and focus must remain clear: swift relief to citizens and a safer, better-managed Delhi," Sandhu said.

On Tuesday, waterlogging was reported at several key locations, with traffic movement affected on stretches, including ITO towards Mandi House, Vikas Marg, Laxmi Nagar, Karol Bagh and Akshardham flyover.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday apologised to residents for rain-triggered waterlogging in several areas under its jurisdiction and said it would strengthen its systems to deal with such situations in the future.

NDMC chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said in a post on X that the civic body was generally able to clear waterlogging within 15-20 minutes, but the water took more than an hour to drain at three to four locations.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday announced a free bus travel scheme for women in the state, naming the initiative after 18th-century ruler Ahilyabai Holkar.

Speaking at the launch programme in Lucknow, Adityanath said the scheme had been named ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Nishulk Bus Yatra’ in recognition of Ahilyabai Holkar's contribution to women's empowerment.

The chief minister said Ahilyabai Holkar had set an example of women's self-reliance while also working towards good governance and protecting India's spiritual and cultural heritage.

Yogi Highlights Ahilyabai Holkar's Legacy

Adityanath said Ahilyabai Holkar played an important role at a time when the country was facing disorder under Mughal invaders. He credited her with pursuing the goals of good governance while working to preserve India's spiritual and cultural heritage.

The chief minister also highlighted her contribution to the restoration of temples across the country.

According to Adityanath, hundreds of temples that had been damaged or destroyed by foreign invaders were subsequently restored under Ahilyabai Holkar's efforts.

Scheme Named After Symbol Of Women's Empowerment

Adityanath said Ahilyabai Holkar's name continues to be remembered with respect whenever women's empowerment and self-reliance are discussed.

He described her as an ideal example of women's self-reliance and said her legacy provided the inspiration for naming the free bus travel initiative after her.

The announcement was made during the programme in Lucknow, where the chief minister highlighted the historical figure's contribution to governance, cultural preservation and women's empowerment.

Heavy rain lashed Delhi on Tuesday morning, leaving several parts of the capital waterlogged and disrupting traffic movement. The downpour also caused significant waterlogging around prominent locations, with visuals showing the new Parliament building surrounded by water.

Videos and photographs showed extensive water accumulation near AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital following the heavy showers. In another rain-related incident, a wall of a building collapsed in Kashmere Gate, highlighting the impact of the intense spell.

According to the weather department, Delhi recorded cloudy skies and heavy rain on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The minimum temperature settled at 23.5 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature was around 33.4 degrees Celsius, 0.7 degrees below the seasonal average.

Delhi Weather Forecast For Wednesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy skies in Delhi on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The minimum temperature is expected to remain between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature could settle between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

Very light to light rain is likely from the morning through the afternoon, according to the forecast. The latest spell of rainfall has already brought down temperatures across the capital, providing some relief from warmer conditions.

In neighbouring areas, Ghaziabad recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, while Noida recorded 34.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Delhi Records Nearly 100 Mm Rain In 24 Hours

According to the IMD, Delhi recorded 99.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8.30 am. A further 8.7 mm was recorded between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.

Aya Nagar recorded the highest rainfall during the period at 101.9 mm, followed by the Ridge at 100 mm. Safdarjung, the city's base station, recorded 99.1 mm, while Lodhi Road received 98.3 mm and Palam recorded 68.8 mm.

The heavy showers contributed to a noticeable fall in temperatures across the capital, with waterlogging reported in multiple areas and traffic movement affected at several points.

Minimum Temperature Falls By 3-4 Degrees

Over the past 24 hours, Delhi's minimum temperatures dropped by 3-4 degrees Celsius, while there was no significant change in maximum temperatures. During the period, minimum temperatures across the city remained between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures ranged from 31 to 33 degrees Celsius.

Eastern winds blew at speeds of 10-15 kmph during the day. At Palam, wind speeds reached up to 30 kmph around 6 pm.

Humidity levels also remained high, with the minimum humidity recorded at 73 per cent and the maximum reaching 100 per cent.
