Singer Chantal Kreviazuk Tweaks Canadian Anthem At Hockey Game Amid Trump's "51st State" Controversy

Chantal Kreviazuk altering the lyrics of Canada's national anthem added another layer of tension to an already politically charged showdown.

Singer Chantal Kreviazuk modified the lyrics of "O Canada" during her pre-game performance at the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game between the U.S. and Canada in Boston, Massachusetts.

She changed the line "in all of us command" to "that only us command" in what appeared to be a response to President Donald Trump's recent remarks referring to Canada as the "51st state" and calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau its "governor."

Kreviazuk altering the lyrics of Canada's national anthem added another layer of tension to an already politically charged showdown. On the ice, Canada clinched a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory against Team USA.

Following Canada's win, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a jab at the U.S. with a post on X, declaring, "You can't take our country — and you can't take our game."

Tensions between U.S.A and Canada intensified after President Trump announced a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, along with a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and Chinese imports, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In response, Prime Minister Trudeau retaliated by imposing a 25% tariff on $106 billion worth of U.S. imports, escalating the trade standoff.

Art to me is an expression of our truth, says singer Kreviazuk

Explaining her actions, Kreviazuk took to Instagram and wrote: "i am sorry if you think that we’d be better off annexed. here is the thing. art to me is an expression of our truth. and in this very peculiar and potentially consequential moment i truly believe that we must stand up, use our voices and try to protect ourselves…

"no – we should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power. i was raised in part by music that was inspired by brave voices committed to peaceful conflict resolution.

"Canada , not unlike ukraine is a sovereign nation. period. we have a culture individual to others. we are united in our values. we care. we’re kind. We are strong."
