RCB Drags Uber Moto To Delhi High Court – Details Inside

The dispute arises from Uber's 'Hyderabaddie' campaign promoting its bike taxi service, in which Travis Head is shown spray-painting the phrase "Royally Challenged Bengaluru" on a stadium sign.

A legal dispute has broken out between Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd, owner of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Uber India Systems Pvt. Ltd over a recent advertisement that RCB claims mocks the team. The franchise has now approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that the ad damages their brand and hurts fan sentiments.

What is the controversy?

The ad, featuring Australian cricketer and ex-RCB star Travis Head - who currently plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad - includes a reference to "Royally Challenged Bengaluru."

RCB argues that this phrase is a clear and intentional mockery of their official team name. According to the franchise, the wordplay crosses the line from humor into brand defamation.

RCB's legal petition reportedly states that not only has the team's name been misrepresented, but its popular slogan, Ee Saala Cup Namde, has also been used in a mocking tone.

The franchise emphasized that this slogan is deeply emotional for both the players and their supporters, and its misuse undermines the spirit and identity of the team. RCB maintains that the ad deliberately targets their trademark and public image, with the sole purpose of creating humor at the team's expense.

What Happens Next?

If the court rules in RCB's favor, Uber India could be directed to withdraw the advertisement and possibly issue a public apology. In India, mocking or misusing trademarks in commercial advertising is a serious matter, especially when it involves high-profile entities like IPL teams.

All eyes are now on the Delhi High Court.
