AUSM Vs WIM: Shane Waton's ton goes in vain as Australia Masters are stunned by West Indies Masters in the International Masters League T20 2025, Match 2, at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.
Brian Lara's men were presented a huge target of 217, after Australia ended their innings at 216/8, thanks to 107-run knock from Shane Watson. Ashley Nurse starred with the ball by scalping 3 wickets for 16 runs in his 3 overs.
The chase turned out to be pretty entertaining, as depsite of losing openers Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith, the 3rd wicket partnership between Lendl Simmons and skipper Brian Lara shifted the match in West Indies Masters' favour, as the side raced to a 7-wicket win with 4 balls remaining.
"Thanks, first of all. It was a bit of gamble to drop Watson early. Obviously I got him out later and did the damage control. I think Lendl played really well and he got us over the line, so yeah really happy," said Ashley Nurse, who was awarded the Player of the Match.
Here's What The Captains Said During Post-Match Presentation Ceremony
Shane Watson (Australia Masters Captain):
"A lot of runs scored, a lot of very good shots. This team has a lot of skills. I think we needed around 230 considering the ability the West Indians guy. But then I think 216 is a good target. But when somebody like Lendl Simmons connects, you have nothing to do. Yes a very good pitch for batting. The bowlers had to put some extra effort to restrict the batters and that took a toll on their body."
Brian Lara (West Indies Masters Captain):
"That's a winning smile. I think we came off the field with a bit of momentum. Ashley Nurse came in and bowled three fine overs and removed Watson. We could've ended up conceding 250. We saw the first game and knew that it would be easier to bat in the next innings.
We like to stick to the process. Lendl Simmons was absolutely brilliant. We kept Nurse away from the attack as the right handers were batting. As there was a left hander, we brought him. Extremely proud of the guys. I am very very pleased as a captain. The boys played with a lot of courage. Extreme passion was there. It is always good to come out on top."
