England faced a major blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with skipper Jos Buttler confirming that promising all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Following England’s four-wicket loss to India in the second ODI in Cuttack on Sunday, Buttler said that he is “pretty sure” that Bethell is ruled out of the mega ICC event. Bethell’s injury also raises concerns for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

Bethell impressed with a fluent 51-run knock and a wicket in the first IND vs ENG ODI, despite England’s defeat. However, a hamstring injury sidelined him for the second and third ODIs against India and is likely to keep him out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.

With the final squad submission deadline for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on February 10 (Wednesday), England will need to find a replacement for the 21-year-old Bethell.

"I'm pretty sure he's been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. So, that's really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players. So, it's a shame that the injury is going to rule him out," England captain Jos Buttler said after the Cuttack loss against India.

England will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Australia on February 22.

RCB, who bought Bethell’s services for ₹2.60 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, also face a concern with Bethell’s injury as England’s rising star was set to be one of their top picks for the playing 11 in the next IPL season.
