Gautam Gambhir, who had to fly back to India due to a family emergency, is expected to return in time for the opening Test against England at Headingley, starting June 20.

According to Cricbuzz, Gambhir is set to leave for England on June 16 and will join the Indian squad in Leeds by June 17.

Gambhir had flown home urgently after his mother reportedly suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the ICU.

Earlier speculation had indicated that NCA head VVS Laxman might fill in temporarily. However, sources have dismissed that claim.

As per reports, Laxman’s visit to the UK was personal. One source clarified that Laxman had attended a conference in Switzerland and made a brief stop in London, but had no official role with the Indian team.

While Laxman may have interacted with some members of the team, officials confirmed he was not assigned any coaching responsibilities. With Gambhir rejoining the squad as planned, Team India will begin the five-Test series with its full leadership group intact.
