Shami ended up being the leading wicket taker in this year’s ODI World Cup 2023, despite missing the first four WC games for India.
An emotional and devastated Shami was consoled by PM Narendra Modi after India’s loss in the World Cup final at the hands of Australia.
During the tournament, Mohammed Shami became the fastest bowler to scalp 50 wickets in ODI World Cups, surpassing Mitchell Starc of Australia.
Shami achieved this milestone within 17 innings, bettering the record of 19 innings by Starc, and also bettered Starc’s record of most five-wicket hauls in the WC.
Shami now sits at 5th in the all-time list of leading wicket takers in the ODI World Cup, behind Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Starc, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Glenn McGrath.
