Sharmila Tagore Beams With Joy As Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri Earns Standing Ovation At Cannes
Veteran stars Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, part of the original ensemble, attended the screening in person.
The restored 4K version was showcased under the prestigious Cannes Classics section, dedicated to heritage cinema.
Tagore’s daughter, Saba Pataudi, shared a video capturing the audience’s emotional ovation post-screening on Instagram.
Saba wrote, “Standing ovation. A beautiful celebration of life. Team that made it all possible. Congratulations!”
Photos showed Tagore and Garewal posing with Wes Anderson, who played a key role in the film’s restoration.
The restoration was led by Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation (World Cinema Project) along with Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and Criterion Collection.
The meticulous 4K restoration took six years and was carried out at L’Immagine Ritrovata, an Italian film restoration lab.
Aranyer Din Ratri, also titled Days and Nights in the Forest, explores alienation, class, and identity through the journey of four urban men in rural India.
