The post, titled “is 1 crore still a big money in India?”, has gone viral, drawing a range of reactions from users offering financial and lifestyle advice.

The anonymous Redditor shared that he moved to New Zealand at the age of 19 and is now around 30 years old. Reflecting on his decision to potentially return to India, he asked, “I been living in New Zealand since I was 19 and now 30. When I left India (2013) 1 crore seems like a big money. How about these days? Reason I am asking this question because I want to return back to India permanently.”

According to his post, he currently has savings amounting to NZD 200,000 (approximately ₹1.03 crore) and owns a house in his village in Punjab. He also revealed additional sources of income: “I own 1 Shopify store which generates around 100K NZD per year (so you can call it a remote job/business). I own US stocks worth about 138K NZD,” he wrote.

Reddit Users Share Practical Advice

The Reddit thread quickly attracted attention, with users offering practical suggestions on how to make the most of the amount if he does choose to return.

“One crore is not retirement money. But if you plan to invest and generate passive income, it can be doable with a decent lifestyle. If you want to do that, I suggest you first identify what you want to do or where you want to invest. Try and see if it works out or generates enough income. Then decide on switching,” one Redditor suggested.

Another advised maintaining a professional connection with New Zealand while living in India: “As someone who splits time between India and NZ, you won’t be able to have a NZ-like lifestyle if you aren’t planning to do any other job. I would say find a remote job with a NZ company and then move. There are plenty.”

Some responses cautioned against rushing into the decision. One user wrote, “I don’t know your situation, but if I were you, I wouldn’t come back unless necessary. It is a good amount of money, but check the tax situation before you transfer your savings. You won’t be able to retire on it but it can comfortably support you if you do something on the side like kheti etc.”

Another Redditor added a more minimalist perspective, saying, “If you don’t have a family to support and don’t intend to have one. Then it is manageable.”

The discussion mirrors a broader concern among non-resident Indians (NRIs) about financial planning and quality of life upon returning home.

4 Friends Plan To Summit Mt Everest In 7 Days, A 'Noble' Gas Is Set To Make The Expedition Possible

ABP Live News

Offbeat

Four men from the UK including a pilot, politician, businessman, and an entrepreneur has decided to climb the Mount Everest this month. This descision was made over a couple of beer, when four ex-military friends had been speaking about taking on an adventurous trip to raise money for a veteran's charity, when one of them brought up the idea of summiting Everest.

The idea, initially denied by Al Carns, a British lawmaker, is now set to be pursued by four climbers, a report in CNN said. The four climbers have decided to reduce the expedition from two months to seven days.

"We’re all busy people. My response was, 'No way I can spend four to six, maybe even eight weeks out climbing Everest — it’s just almost impossible," AI Carns told CNN.

However, it was later countered by a friend who brought the prospect of climbing the Everest via a noble way, he had heard about. The idea was to summit the Everest by altering the acclimatization process that could allow them to reach the peak in under seven days by by inhaling a noble gas called xenon ahead of the expedition.

How Will Xenon Help The Climbers?

The four climbers are set to reduce the time of the expedition using a noble gas Xenon— which they plan to inhale 10 days before their journey.

They have planned to fly from UK to Kathmandu, from where they will be taken to the base camp via a helicopter and further attempt to climb the Everest in a few days. This would be made possible by inhaling Xenon, ten days prior to the expedition. This preparation is part of a specialized tour by Furtenbach Adventures.

In conversation with CNN Travel, Lukas Furtenbach, CEO of Furtenbach Adventures said, "Before you can go to climb Mount Everest, you need to adapt your body to the low levels of oxygen.”

"You can do this in a traditional way — trekking to base camp and then several rotations on the mountain, and then, after weeks of acclimatizing, your body is ready to build enough red blood cells, and then you can start your summit attempt," he further said.

Moreover, he also emphasized that he had spoken at length with a doctor who was an expert in noble gasses, including xenon, which also sometimes works as an anesthetic. He was convinced of its potential to increase the production of erythropoietin, also known as EPO which is a hormone naturally produced by human kidneys to facilitate the production of Red blood cells in the human body. Although he also stated the side-effects of EPO that it increases the count of RBC's in the blood, the same effects are experienced when you are acclimatizing at real altitude.

Experts have raised serious health concerns about using xenon gas for high-altitude climbs like Everest. As an anesthetic, xenon can impair brain function and breathing, increasing the risk of cerebral and pulmonary edema. Medical professionals warn that its intended effect which is boosting red blood cell production usually takes weeks, not days. The International Climbing Federation says there's no proof xenon improves mountain performance, and using it without supervision could lead to severe side effects or death. This substance has also been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2014.

From Superstition To Science: The Life-Saving Habit Of Washing Hands That We Once Ignored

Kirti Pandey

Offbeat

On 5 May 2025, World Hand Hygiene Day reminds us of a critical truth in healthcare: gloves are never a substitute for clean hands. This year, the WHO campaign – SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands – turns its focus to appropriate glove use alongside hand hygiene, with the theme: "It Might Be Gloves. It's Always Hand Hygiene."

But beyond what we all know, let us look into how a simple act of washing hands went from medieval neglect to an essential practice in modern medicine and lifestyle.

Today, washing your hands may feel routine — almost trivial. A squirt of sanitiser at the hospital entrance. Soap bubbles in the kitchen sink. But behind this everyday ritual lies a fascinating and hard-fought history — one that weaves through ancient civilizations, medical revolutions, deadly ignorance, and ultimately, a global health awakening.

Ancient India's Pioneering Role

Human beings have been rinsing their hands for millennia. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used water symbolically before meals or religious rituals. In ancient India, handwashing was linked to Ayurvedic principles of cleanliness and purity. But these practices were rooted more in culture and ritual than science. No one understood that microscopic pathogens— the invisible agents of diseases — could be transmitted from dirty hands.

The Age Of Myths: When Filth Was Fashionable

During the Middle Ages in Europe, bathing itself was considered "dangerous". Doctors believed water could open "pores" and let disease in. Perfume was prized above cleanliness, and royalty often boasted about how infrequently they bathed. Hospitals lacked basic sanitation, and surgical instruments were reused without cleaning.

The idea that unwashed hands could spread disease? "Ludicrous," they thought.

Ignaz Semmelweis — A Pioneer Who Landed In An Asylum

It wasn't until the mid-19th century that a Hungarian doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis made a bold (and controversial for that time) claim. Working at a Vienna maternity ward, Semmelweis noticed something disturbing: women attended by doctors (who had just come from autopsies) were dying of "childbed fever" at far higher rates than those attended by midwives.

His solution? Handwashing.

Semmelweis instructed doctors to wash their hands with chlorinated lime before delivering babies. Deaths plummeted.
Yet instead of applause, he was ridiculed, ostracised, and eventually committed to an asylum. His findings defied the established medical beliefs of the time, when the existence of germs was still unknown.

Enter Germ Theory: A Revolution Begins

Around the same time, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch began piecing together the germ theory of disease — the idea that microorganisms cause illness. This revelation validated Semmelweis's work. Later, British surgeon Joseph Lister adopted antiseptic practices using carbolic acid to clean wounds and surgical tools, ushering in the era of sterile surgery. Hand hygiene was finally gaining ground — not just as etiquette, but as a life-saving practice.

Soap's Slow But Steady Rise

While soap had existed since ancient Babylon, it was largely used for laundry, not hygiene. With industrialisation in the 19th and 20th centuries, soap became mass-produced and more affordable. Public health campaigns during the World Wars emphasised handwashing for soldiers and civilians alike, linking clean hands to reduced infections.

Still, it wasn't until the 1980s that the American Health Body — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — published the first formal hand hygiene guidelines for healthcare workers.

Sanitiser Surge: A New Era Of Convenience

In the late 1990s, alcohol-based hand sanitisers emerged as a life-changer. Quick, portable, and effective against most pathogens, they revolutionised hand hygiene, especially in hospitals where compliance was often low due to time constraints.
Then came COVID-19 — a global pandemic that brought hand hygiene back into the spotlight like never before. In 2020, hand sanitisers flew off shelves. "Wash your hands" became a global mantra. And for once, the world finally understood what Semmelweis had been trying to say all along.

Hate Bathing? Join The Erstwhile European Royalty

Think you're skipping showers too often? Royalty might've outdone you! Queen Isabella of Castile claimed she bathed only twice—once at birth and once before marriage. King Louis XIV reportedly took just a handful of baths in his lifetime, preferring perfumes and powdered wigs over soap and water. And King James VI and I? He believed bathing was bad for health and stuck to changing clothes instead.

Why the stink about staying clean? Back then, people feared that bathing opened pores to "bad air" (miasma), spreading disease. With poor plumbing, bathhouses were a breeding grounds for infections. Hence, the fear.

Dead Pope's Trial To The Legend Of A 'Woman' Pope — Bizarre Facts From Papal History

ABP Live News

Offbeat

Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, leaves behind a rich legacy of Catholic practices. However, in a deviation from tradition, he requested a simple burial outside the Vatican in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

When we think of the papacy, images of solemn ceremonies, ancient traditions, and moral authority often come to mind. But beneath the surface of Vatican grandeur lies a trove of strange, often unbelievable stories that history seems to have tucked away in dusty corners. The history of the papacy isn't just sacred — it's downright bizarre in places. These lesser-known facts reveal a side of the Catholic Church's leadership that's equal parts curious, fascinating, and even shocking.

Deceased Pope Who Was Dug Up And Put On Trial

Yes, you read that right. In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI ordered the corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, to be exhumed and placed on trial in what is now famously known as the Cadaver Synod. Dressed in papal vestments and propped up on a throne, the decaying body of Formosus faced charges ranging from perjury to violating church law.

Unsurprisingly, the dead pope lost. His papal fingers were chopped off, and his body was tossed into the Tiber River.

A few months later, however, Pope Theodore II honourably reburied Formosus's corpse at St. Peter’s in Rome after vindicating his pontificate.

A Teenage Pope? Almost

In the 11th century, Pope Benedict IX made headlines — well, chronicles at least — as one of the youngest popes ever. Installed as pope in his early teens, Benedict IX's reign was marked by scandal, corruption, and a striking lack of maturity. He reportedly sold the papacy not once, but twice, and is the only Pope in history to have done so.

He was known more for his decadent lifestyle than any spiritual leadership. His chaotic tenure saw him resigning, returning, and being driven out multiple times. Eventually, he was excommunicated.

A Woman Pope?

One of the most persistent legends in papal lore is that of Pope Joan — a woman who, disguised as a man, supposedly rose through the church ranks as John VIII and was elected pope in the 9th century (855). Her secret was allegedly discovered only when she gave birth during a public procession, as per Britannica.

While historians widely regard the tale as myth, the story of Pope Joan has endured for centuries, even prompting the Vatican to allegedly avoid certain routes during ceremonies to prevent passing the spot of her supposed exposure.

Papal Resignations: Rare But Real

While the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013 shocked the modern world, papal resignations are not entirely unheard of. The most famous case before him occurred in 1294, when Pope Celestine V — an elderly hermit who never wanted the role — resigned after just five months.

His brief papacy was so tumultuous that Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy, possibly referenced him as the soul "who made the great refusal", placing him in Hell for his decision to abandon his duties.

After him, Gregory XII was forced to resign in 1415 after a split in the Catholic Church.

When The Pope Became A Prisoner

In 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the arrest of Pope Pius VII, dragging him from Rome to France after a clash over the emperor's attempts to control the Church. Pius was a prisoner from 1809 to 1814, refusing to grant Napoleon religious legitimacy. His steadfastness earned him respect, and when he finally returned to Rome, crowds hailed him as a hero.

The Snake In Your Mind: What Is ‘Ophidiophobia’?

ABP Live News

Offbeat

Fear Of Snakes: Snakes have long fascinated and terrified humans, evoking a mix of awe and dread. Snakes have long inspired folklore, fiction, movies, and songs, as there is no place on Earth where snakes have not captured the fascination of humans. From Indian movies and serials like 'Naagin' to Harry Potter's ability to speak in Parseltongue to the cult classics like 'Snakes On A Plane' and the 'Anaconda' franchise — snakes have always captured our imagination. But with the fascination comes a dread for many.

Sometimes, the fear is so overwhelming that people have nightmares or are scared of even toy snakes, which they know are harmless; and this extreme fear of snakes is what is known as 'ophidiophobia'.

Ophidiophobia is not limited to mere revulsion from snakes. It can, in fact, disrupt the daily life and mental well-being of a person.

What Is Ophidiophobia?

Phobia, a type of anxiety disorder, is characterised by an overwhelming fear of certain objects or situations — in this case, snakes. While it’s normal to feel uneasy around these reptiles, ophidiophobia goes beyond typical discomfort. It manifests as extreme anxiety or panic at the mere thought of snakes, images of them, or even environments where they might be present. This phobia affects approximately 2–3% of people globally, though more than half the population reports some level of fear towards snakes.

How Does Ophidiophobia Impact Lives?

The symptoms of ophidiophobia can range from mild unease to severe physical and psychological reactions. Common symptoms include physical reactions, such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, nausea, dizziness, and chest tightness.

This extreme fear can even trigger severe panic attacks.

There could also be psychological effects like a feeling of terror, impending doom, or losing control. People suffering from ophidiophobia may also tend to avoid forests and zoos — places usually associated with snakes.

In extreme cases, individuals may avoid outdoor activities such as hiking or camping altogether, fearing encounters with snakes or snake-like objects like ropes. Such behaviour is known as avoidance behaviour.

Why Do People Develop A Fear Of Snakes?

The origins of ophidiophobia are varied and complex. It is still not clear why people develop ophidiophobia. In some people, this might be a result of traumatic experiences like having been bitten by a snake or learning of someone's death from a snake bite.

Some researches indicate that ophidiophobia can be a result of evolution, wherein humans have a basic instinct of avoiding snakes. The condition is also linked to other anxiety disorders such as agoraphobia or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The cultural portrayal of snakes, such as in folktales and movies, can also result in the development of ophidiophobia.

Can Fear Of Snakes Be Treated?

Diagnosing ophidiophobia involves assessing the severity and duration of symptoms. Mental health professionals usually look for signs such as persistent anxiety over a stipulated period and avoidance behaviors that interfere with daily life.

Treatment often includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps individuals identify and reframe negative thought patterns associated with their phobia.

Another treatment measure is 'Exposure Therapy', where people with a fear of snakes are exposed to snakes slowly in highly controlled settings to desensitise them of their triggers.

In severe cases, anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed alongside therapy.

Inside The World’s Largest Snake Gathering — The Narcisse Snake Dens Of Manitoba

ABP Live News

Offbeat

Each spring, a remarkable spectacle unfolds in the heart of Manitoba, Canada, as the Narcisse Snake Dens come alive with the world's largest gathering of snakes. This natural phenomenon attracts many visitors eager to witness the mesmerising sight of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerging from their winter homes.

Of course, for those with ophidiophobia, or a fear of snakes, this would be an absolute nightmare.

The Narcisse Snake Dens

Nestled just six kilometres north of the small community of Narcisse, these dens are formed by limestone outcrops that create ideal hibernation spots for the snakes. As winter wanes and temperatures rise, an instinctual alarm clock signals the snakes to emerge from their subterranean caverns.

What follows is a breathtaking display of nature as male snakes eagerly await the arrival of females, leading to a frenzied mating ritual within a "mating ball". Here, several hundred males surround a single female, creating a tangled mass that rolls across the ground in a dramatic courtship dance.

The Narcisse Snake Dens are not just a haven for these reptiles; they also serve as a crucial site for conservation efforts. In recent years, the population has fluctuated between 75,000 and 150,000 snakes, according to Forbes, thanks in part to measures implemented to protect them from highway traffic during their migration.

Conservation Efforts

Conservationists have installed snake-proof fencing and underground tunnels to facilitate safe passage across busy roads, significantly reducing roadkill incidents.

Visitors flock to this unique wildlife management area not only for the thrill of seeing so many snakes but also for the educational experience. Seasonal interpreters are on-site to guide guests through the three-kilometre interpretive trail, sharing insights about the snakes' behavior and habitat

Families often find themselves captivated by the sight of these harmless creatures slithering about, with some even daring to gently pick one up — a stark contrast to the fear often associated with snakes.

The annual emergence of red-sided garter snakes has become a bucket-list event for wildlife enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. With approximately 35,000 people visiting each year, it's clear that this extraordinary gathering is more than just a natural event; it's a celebration of life, resilience, and the intricate web of ecosystems that sustain us all.

Maha Shivratri: How Does Lord Shiva Connect CERN In Switzerland And India?

Abhishek Chakraborty

Offbeat

Wednesday marks the end of Maha Kumbh and the celebration of Maha Shivratri in honour of Lord Shiva. Shiv Ratri is one of the biggest festivals in India, the country where each religion is celebrated with equal fervour. On this day, we bring you a fascinating connection between Lord Shiv and CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.

The connection between the Hindu deity and the world of modern physics is symbolised by a majestic Nataraj statue standing proudly at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva. CERN is known for the discovery of the Higgs boson and the invention of the World Wide Web, among other notable research.

Nataraj Statue A Gift From India

The Nataraj statue, gifted by the Government of India in 2004, celebrates the long-standing collaboration between India and CERN, which began in the 1960s and continues to flourish today. The 2-metre-tall bronze statue is more than just a decorative piece; it represents a profound metaphor that bridges ancient mythology with modern physics.

The artist of the sculpture was Rajan from Tamil Nadu, who was commissioned by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs through the Central Cottage Industries Emporium. It was unveiled by the Director General, Dr Robert Aymar, His Excellency Mr K. M. Chandrasekhar, Ambassador (WTO-Geneva) and Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Dept of Atomic Energy, India.

As per a statement by the CERN, the statue was presented to CERN by the Department of Atomic Energy of India and was unveiled on June 18, 2004. Dr Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister of India back then.

India's relations with Switzerland can be traced back to the 1950s and 1960s. India became an Associate member state of CERN on January 16, 2017.

Nataraj And The Cosmic Dance

In Hindu mythology, Nataraj is the depiction of Shiva as the cosmic dancer, whose dance, known as Tandava, symbolises the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. This concept resonates deeply with the work at CERN, where physicists study the "cosmic dance" of subatomic particles, exploring the fundamental building blocks of the universe and the forces that govern them.

'Nataraj', literally translates to "Lord of Dance", embodying the cosmic dance of creation and destruction. This iconic form symbolises Shiva's role as the destroyer, preserver, and regenerator of the universe. Nataraj is depicted dancing within a halo of flames, representing the cyclical nature of life and the universe. His dance, known as Tandava, is a powerful metaphor for the eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

Each element of Nataraj's depiction holds deep symbolism: the drum signifies creation, the flame represents destruction, and the foot planted on 'Apasmara' represents victory over ignorance. The 'baby' on which Lord Shiv is standing is the Apasmara or 'Muyalak' demon.

Bridging Mythology And Science

The presence of Nataraj at CERN highlights the connection between ancient wisdom and modern science. Physicist Fritjof Capra popularised this metaphor in his book 'The Tao of Physics' in the 1970s, drawing parallels between Shiva's cosmic dance and the rhythms of creation and destruction observed in modern physics.

A plaque near the statue quotes Capra: "Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art, and modern physics."

Two days after the unveiling of the statue, Fritjof on his website said: "In choosing the image of Shiva Nataraj, the Indian government acknowledged the profound significance of the metaphor of Shiva’s dance for the cosmic dance of subatomic particles, which is observed and analysed by CERN’s physicists."

This President's Term Was Shorter Than Your Lunch Break. He was the President of Mexico for less than an hour in 1913 — the shortest presidential term ever. Imagine the inauguration speech. Born in Mexico City in 1858, Lascuráin was no stranger to politics.

A lawyer by trade, he climbed the political ladder, eventually becoming the mayor of his hometown in 1910. But his ascent to the presidency was less about ambition and more about being in the wrong place at the right time — or perhaps — the right place at the wrong time.

Mexico in 1913 was a nation in turmoil. President Porfirio Díaz, who had ruled for over three decades, finally stepped down, opening the door for Francisco Madero. However, Madero's administration was short-lived, as General Victoriano Huerta orchestrated a coup.

Here’s where Lascuráin enters centre stage. As the foreign minister, he was in the line of succession. Huerta forced Madero and his Vice-President to resign. To legitimise his power grab, Huerta needed a 'temporary president' to appoint him as interior minister, making him next in line. Lascuráin was that man.

Lascuráin assumed the presidency and in a move that could be described as the political equivalent of a hot potato, appointed Huerta as his interior minister. Then, he resigned. The entire charade lasted anywhere from 15-45 minutes.

Huerta's actions were far from honourable. He had assured President Madero and Vice-President Suárez that they would be safe after they resigned, but he ultimately had them executed. Despite his brief time in office, Lascuráin's actions had consequences.

What happened to Lascuráin? Unlike Huerta, who faced rebellion and exile, Lascuráin managed to stay out of the fray. He returned to his law practice and quietly lived out his days. He died in 1952.
