Trump Mocks Trudeau Amid Tariff Threat, Calls Him ‘Governor Of State Of Canada'
When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said such heavy tariffs would destroy the Canadian economy, Trump told him to make Canada the 51st state. During the dinner also called Trudeau "governor".
President-elect Donald Trump continued his joke about Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States, by referring the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor”.
According to PTI, Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago last week for a dinner with Trump to discuss the President-elect's warning of imposing a 25 percent tariff on Canada if its government does not take measures to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the US.
During the dinner, when Trudeau said that such a tariff would destroy the Canadian economy, the President-elect reportedly told him to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
Prime Minister Trudeau said that the heavy tariffs would destroy the Canadian economy, Trump reportedly told him to make Canada the 51st state. He repeated this in an interview with NBC News over the weekend.
Later, in a post on Truth Social mocking the Canadian prime minister, Trump said, "It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada."
"I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT," Trump added.
According to CBC Canada, it remains unclear why Trump is going public with the annexation taunt.
However, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told media reporters that Trump’s quip at the dinner was clearly a joke and not some signal of a serious plan to annex Canada. LeBlanc in a three-hour social evening at Trump’s residence in Florida the conversation was light-hearted.
“The president was telling jokes, the president was teasing us, it was, of course, in no way a serious comment," LeBlanc said.
"The fact that there's a warm, cordial relationship between the two leaders and the president is able to joke like that, we think, is a positive thing," he added.
Earlier, Trudeau suggested that Canada would take action against the US if Trump raised the punishing 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian imports. "We will, of course, as we did eight years ago, respond to unfair tariffs in a number of ways and we're still looking at the right ways to respond," Trudeau was quoted by CBC Canada, referring to Canada's response to Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminium in his first term.
