2 Killed, 19 Injured In Israeli Air Strikes On Southern Syrian Province Of Daraa

Israel launched air strikes in southern Syria, targeting military headquarters and sites containing weapons and equipment that belonged to the forces of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

At least two people were killed and 19 others injured on Monday after Israel launched air strikes in the vicinity of the southern province of Daraa, Syrian state agency SANA reported.

The strikes were confirmed by the Israeli army which were the latest string of strikes targeting Syria's military infrastructure, reported Reuters. The Israeli military said it targeted military headquarters and sites containing weapons and equipment that belonged to the forces of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Israeli army “is currently striking military targets in southern Syria, including command centres and military sites containing weapons and military vehicles belonging to the old Syrian regime,” said the army in a statement. It added that the "military assets" posed "a threat to the State of Israel."

It further said that the army "will not allow the presence of military threats in southern Syria and will operate against it."

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israel targeted a military site previously used by the forces of al-Assad but now by the army of Syria's new government.

Four Israeli air strikes targeted Deraa on Monday night, reported Al Jazeera.

While SANA news agency pegged the death toll at 2, the Syrian health ministry reported "three martyrs and 19 civilians injured," adding four children and a woman were among wounded "as result of an Israeli airstrike targeting the outskirts of Daraa," reported AFP.

Previous Strikes In The Province

This is not the first time when the Israeli forces have launched strikes in the southern Syrian province, near the Jordanian border. Earlier this month, it targeted several Syrian military assets in the same area.

At that time, the Israeli military said that the military sites, which had included bases and radar systems, posed a threat that the strike was meant to “eliminate”.
