West Bengal Schools Closed On February 14: No, It's Not For Valentine's Day

The West Bengal government has announced that all state-run educational institutions will remain closed on February 13 and 14 (Thursday and Friday). This decision was made to observe Shab-e-Barat and Panchanan Barma Jayanti.
Initially, the government had only declared February 14 as a holiday for Shab-e-Barat. However, after the confirmation that Shab-e-Barat would fall on February 13, the state government included this day as a public holiday. The holiday for February 14 remains, marking the birth anniversary of Thakur Panchanan Barma.
All government offices, local bodies, and educational institutions will also remain closed on both days. Since February 15 and 16 fall on a Saturday and Sunday, government employees will have a four-day break and a long weekend.
What Are Shab-e-Barat And Panchanan Barma Jayanti?
Shab-e-Barat is an important Islamic celebration that occurs on the 15th night of Sha'ban, the Islamic month. It is considered a night of forgiveness and mercy, during which Muslims offer prayers, seek blessings, and honour their ancestors. Many Muslims spend the night in prayer at mosques and homes, asking for forgiveness and guidance.
Thakur Panchanan Barma was a Rajbanshi leader and social reformer from Bengal. His birth anniversary is celebrated to honour his contributions to social reforms, including the upliftment of marginalised Koch Rajbanshi and peasant communities and women empowerment.
