BJP Hails Budget For Income Tax Exemption, Opposition Says: 'Devil Is In Details'

The Union Budget 2025-26 received praise from BJP for raising the income tax exemption limit for salaried individuals. However, the Opposition criticised the budget, calling it weak and disappointing.

The Bharatiya Janata Party hailed the Union Budget 2025-26 after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced income tax exemption for salaried people upto Rs 12.75 lakh.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the "middle class is always in PM Modi's heart."

"The proposed tax exemption will go a long way in enhancing the financial well-being of the middle class. Congratulations to all the beneficiaries on this occasion," Shah said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the announcement a "big gift" for the middle class.

"Certainly, this welfare decision will benefit the common man of the country including the middle class. This decision will not only encourage economic development but will also bring positive changes in the lifestyle of the people. Thanks for this historic decision- Congratulations to the Prime Minister...," Dhami said in a post on X.

Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha lauded the Finance Minister for making special announcements for Bihar.

"The biggest announcement for Bihar is that it will have a greenfield airport. It is a huge announcement. A Makhana Board will be formed, 85-90% of Makhana is cultivated in Mithila area, Kosi are," Jha said.

"There is global demand for Makhana now. Western Kosi irrigation system had been a long pending demand of the Mithila region. FM has made an announcement about this. An announcement for a food-processing institute has also been made. So, overall these announcements are very positive for Bihar...Taxation relief up to Rs 12 Lakhs is a major relief," he added.

'Devil Is In Details': Opposition

However, the Opposition slammed the NDA government calling it the "weakest" and "disappointing" budget. "This is the weakest budget in the last 10 years...," said Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. On the tax exemption, Gogi said Sitharaman gave no details, its all description.

"This is this government's old tactic, they project it like this but when we go into the details, we see there's no advantage," he said.

Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also slammed the government for giving incentives to Bihar and not Punjab.

"Look at the names of the states - Bihar, which is going to elections. Only Bihar, Bihar, Bihar. There was no mention of Punjab. Farmers have been sitting in protest for the past 4 years over the legal guarantee for MSP. What did they announce for farmers? Makhana Board. This was an anti-farmer Budget," she said.

Dravida Munnetra Kazagham MP Dayanidhi Maran said the Budget was "very disappointing" and seemed like it was designed to woo the voters of Delhi.

"The FM has given a big exemption saying that for Rs 12 Lakhs, there is no tax. Then she goes on to say that there is a slab of 10% for Rs 8-12 Lakhs. So, it is very confusing. I think the devil is in the details," he said.

"She tries to promise the voters there is exemption of tax till Rs 12 Lakhs but this is not simple and straightforward. They have to claim in TDS and all these things...So, basically, it's a letdown for the middle class once again. Middle class seems to have been cheated by the FM once again," Maran said.
