Groom Leads Barat Through Muddy Path After Ramban Cloudburst – WATCH

A groom and his wedding procession walked through a muddy street in Jammu & Kashmir after a landslide closed the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.

Traffic was also suspended at nearly a dozen places between Nashri and Banihal along the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Walking through the muddy street, a ‘barat’ (wedding procession) had to walk to his venue, due to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway caused by the Ramban landslide, Jammu & Kashmir on Monday.

Dressed in his wedding attire, the groom carefully waded through the street along with the rest of the ‘barat’.

This is after a cloudburst Ramban district early Sunday morning, the heavy rains triggered a flash flood in a village, and over 100 people had to be rescued. Incessant rains have wreaked havoc in the union territory, causing landslides, flash floods, and destruction of several properties in Ramban.

Traffic was also suspended at nearly a dozen places between Nashri and Banihal along the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Landslides & Heavy Rain

Landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at several places between Nashri and Banihal affected vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, causing inconvenience to travellers as traffic was stopped from both sides, a traffic department spokesperson told PTI.

The highway was suspended due to debris from mountains blocking the route at nearly a dozen places between Nashri and Banihal. Boulders and sludge from landslides and mudslides covered many areas. Teams from the Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil volunteers, Army, and other key departments, along with local NGOs, were actively involved in rescue and restoration operations across Ramban and surrounding areas affected by the landslides.

All schools in Kashmir have also been directed to remain shut on Monday in view of heavy rain.

NC leader Farooq Abdullah said large-scale damage has been reported in the Ramban and Banihal areas. "The government is rushing its ministers to the affected areas and we will also request the Centre for financial assistance so that adequate relief is given to the people hit by the disaster," he was quoted by PTI.
