Expelled From Lok Sabha, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Changes Twitter Bio

A Surat court on Thursday last week pronounced two years of jail for Rahul Gandhi in the four-year old defamation case and was next day disqualified from his membership in Lok Sabha.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has changed his Twitter bio to "Dis'qualified MP" after his removal from Lok Sabha following conviction in the 2019 defamation case. A Surat court on Thursday last week pronounced two years of jail for the party leader in the four-year old criminal case and was next day disqualified from his membership in Lok Sabha.   

"This is the official account of Rahul Gandhi | Member of the Indian National Congress | Dis’Qualified MP," reads the updated Twitter bio of the former Wayanad MP. 

 

The development comes the Congress is holding a day-long 'Satyagraha' on Sunday in protest against disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha in front of Gandhi statues at all states and district headquarters.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are participating in the ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ at Raj Ghat in the national capital.

The Congress said that Rahul Gandhi's conviction in the defamation case and his disqualification from Lok Sabha, which it alleged was done in reaction to his consistently questioning the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Gautam Adani, poses a serious threat to India’s democracy.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark i.e. March 23. The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification on Friday in this regard.

"Consequent upon his conviction by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Surat in C.C./18712/2019, Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951," the notification by the Lok Sabha Secretariat reads.

The Congress Party reacted to the development saying that it will fight the battle "both legally and politically."
