Assam Floods And Landslides Claim 3 More Lives, Death Toll Rises To 26 In 2025
Assam floods and landslides have claimed 26 lives in 2025, affecting over 2.6 lakh people. Relief efforts continue as water levels recede and government support ramps up.
Assam’s ongoing battle with floods and landslides took a tragic turn on Sunday as three more lives were lost, pushing this year’s death toll to 26, officials confirmed. The latest fatalities include three children who drowned in floodwaters in Kamalpur, Kamrup district, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by vulnerable communities.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have claimed 20 lives across the state so far in 2025, while landslides have accounted for six deaths. Despite the grim figures, there is a silver lining as water levels are gradually receding in most affected areas, signaling a slow but steady improvement in the flood situation.
Nearly 260,000 residents across 11 districts remain grappling with the aftermath of the deluge. The hardest-hit regions include Sribhumi, Hailakandi, and Cachar, where over 1.6 lakh, 51,600, and 36,200 people respectively continue to endure flood-related hardships. In total, 741 villages spread over 32 revenue circles are still underwater, with more than 6,300 hectares of farmland submerged, threatening crops and livelihoods.
Relief efforts remain underway, with over 31,000 individuals currently housed in 130 relief camps and distribution centers across the flood-affected zones. The ASDMA report also noted the impact on wildlife, revealing that seven animals have died so far in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, though authorities successfully rescued 31 others from floodwaters.
In response to the crisis, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently conducted a comprehensive review of the situation during a visit to Hailakandi and Sribhumi districts. Meeting with district officials and frontline workers, he reassured flood victims of the government’s unwavering support to restore normalcy as waters recede. During his visit, the Chief Minister toured several flood-impacted areas, including relief camps in Kalinagar and Panch Gram, where he engaged directly with displaced residents and promised sustained assistance to ease their suffering.
