Andhra Pradesh: Newlywed Man Dies By Suicide After Loan App Agents Circulate Wife's Picture
Due to the weather conditions after his wedding, Narendra was unable to venture into the sea and was reeling under financial issues.
A 25-year-old man died by suicide in Visakhapatnam allegedly after being subjected to harassment by agents of an instant loan app. The suicide reported under Maharanipeta police station limits is the third such harassment incident in a span of a week in Andhra Pradesh. The man identified as Narendra, a fisherman, took the extreme step after his wife's images were circulated to his family and relatives after he reportedly defaulted the pay.
On October 28, Narendra recently married the love of his life Akhila. They did an intercaste love marriage despite opposition. In the meantime, due to the weather conditions after his wedding, Narendra was unable to venture into the sea and was reeling under financial issues. So, he got a loan of Rs 2,000 through an instant loan app, according to a report on NDTV. Although he repaid more than the borrowed amount with interest, he was unable to clear the full dues.
Following this, the loan app agents reportedly began harassing him with abusive messages. In a final blow, they went on to circulate morphed pictures of Narendra and his wife to his contacts. The harassment escalated when Akhila received one of the images with a price quote on it. Soon, Narendra disclosed about the loan to her.
Even after they managed to repay the entire outstanding amount, the couple continued to face harassment. Friends and relatives began questioning Narendra about the images. This left him humiliated and distressed. On December 7, unable to bear the stigma, he took his own life, reported Times of India.
Earlier, in Nandyal district, a young woman also faced similar harassment from loan app agents and attempted suicide but was rescued by the police.
