Mehraj Malik, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Jammu and Kashmir chief and a sitting MLA, has found himself at the centre of a criminal case after a woman doctor accused him of defamation and harassment, reported PTI. Police in Doda district have formally registered an FIR against Malik on serious charges, including criminal intimidation, defamation, and outraging the modesty of a woman.

The case stems from a complaint filed by an associate professor at a medical college. In her written statement to the Doda police, she alleged that Malik had resorted to using social media to launch public threats and level abusive, gender-specific slurs against her. The FIR was registered shortly after her complaint was received.

Complaint Alleges Threats To Hospital Security

According to the complainant, the alleged misconduct went beyond just verbal abuse. She accused the MLA of issuing threats that endangered not only her personal safety but also the overall security of the hospital. Her complaint reportedly detailed multiple instances of intimidation and called attention to the impact of Malik’s actions on the functioning of the medical institution.

The FIR mentions that the abusive and derogatory comments were made online, where Malik allegedly targeted the doctor using language that was not only insulting but also carried an implicit threat to her dignity and safety.

Police Begin Investigation, Case Draws Attention

The police have taken cognisance of the complaint and initiated an investigation. Charges mentioned in the FIR include defamation, criminal intimidation, and insult to the modesty of a woman — a serious set of allegations under the Indian Penal Code.

This development is likely to stir political ripples in Jammu and Kashmir, especially given Malik’s position as both the AAP's regional face and an elected MLA. The authorities have not released any additional statement as of now, and further updates are awaited as the case progresses.
