New Delhi: A day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the state law guaranteeing 75% reservation to locals in private sector jobs, the Haryana government has challenged the order in the Supreme Court.

The apex court agreed to hear the matter on Monday after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta put forth his views on behalf of the Haryana government.

Earlier on Thursday, a bench of Justices Ajay Tewari and Pankaj Jain admitted the petitions challenging the Haryana government’s law for reservation in the private sector while staying the law.

The Haryana Industries Association had earlier moved the High Court against the state government’s decision to inform that the notification of the law for reservation in private jobs was issued in Haryana in 2021 itself.

The Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Act, 2020, was passed in November last year. It had come into effect on January 15 this year.

Giving 75% reservation in private sector jobs was a key poll guarantee of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) during the 2019 assembly elections.

The party formed a government in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the polls.

“We will continue to fight for employment opportunities of Haryanvi youth #75%reservation,” tweeted Chautala earlier on Thursday after the High Court stayed the law.

The Act covers jobs that pay up to Rs 30,000 as gross monthly salary and applies to companies, societies, trusts, limited liability partnership firms, partnership firms located across the state.

Under the Act, it was said that the benefit of the scheme would be available only to the natives of Haryana.
