New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Wednesday that the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 seems to have gone past in the national capital, after a record single-day spike of 28,000 cases.

The positivity rate had become as high as 30 percent last week in Delhi. Delhi had recorded 28,867 Covid-19 cases last Thursday, the sharpest single-day spike since the beginning of the pandemic.

"Seems the peak of the 3rd Covid wave has gone past in Delhi, after a record single-day rise of 28,000 cases, and 30 percent positivity rate," PTI quoted Jain as saying.

The minister said that the trend of Covid-19 cases in Delhi needs to be watched. "Covid-19 wave peak in Delhi may be gone, but still can't say we are out of the danger zone, we need to watch the trend," Jain said.

He further said that proactive measures led to the decline in cases. "For the decision on easing curbs, we will have to monitor the situation first," the minister added.

After the highest single-day spike in cases on Thursday, the numbers declined to 24,383 on Friday, 20,718 on Saturday, 18,286 on Sunday, 12,527 on Monday, and 11,684 on Tuesday.

However, there was a rise in the number of cases on Wednesday. The tally was up by a little over 2,000 cases compared to what Delhi recorded on Tuesday.

The national capital reported 13,785 new Covid-19 cases, 16,580 recoveries, and 35 deaths on Wednesday. With an active caseload of 75,282, the positivity rate stood at 5.11 percent on Wednesday.

Jain had said on Wednesday that the positivity rate in the city is not low enough to lift the restrictions imposed to contain the spread of the infection.

Despite the spike recorded in the national capital last week, the minister had said that daily hospital admissions have not increased for one week.

Jain reiterated that the ongoing wave of the pandemic has peaked and is on the decline in Delhi. "We hope that its descent is as sharp as its rise. Let us wait for a few more days," he said.
