Covid Treatment: Excessive Use Of Decoction And Vitamins Leads To Increased Cases Of Anal Fissure

Decoctions and vitamins boost immunity and are hence widely used as a measure to reduce the risk of corona infection. Doctors have detected anal fissures caused by constipation among those who consume it in excessive quantities.

Pune: The excessive use of decoctions, antibiotics, and vitamin tablets among Covid-19 patients has led to an increase in the cases of constipation-induced anal fissure. Proctologist Dr. Ashwin Porwal said, "Between April 10 and May 20, we detected anal fissures in 481 patients. These patients were either suspected of being infected with Covid-19 or were confirmed cases of Covid-19. At the same time, anal fissures were identified in 223 people who were not infected with Covid-19. This indicates that anal fissures are common and affects people of any age.

Dr. Ashwin Porwal added, "When we investigated, all 481 people admitted to having been involved in the widespread use of decoction ('Kadha'), vitamin pills, and antibiotics". He shared important tips to treat Covid, in addition to the prescribed medicine. It has been found that extensive overuse of the decoction can cause side effects like hyperacidity, inflammation, and irritation in the stomach and intestines. Decoctions produce heat in the body, which may lead to dryness of the membranes in the stomach and intestine, and may also cause constipation or diarrhea. The doctor added that there may be constipation, diarrhea, and gas fissure. This has been confirmed by other doctors as well.

Constipation has led to an increase in cases of anal fissure.

Dr. Akshay Sonone, a physician who has treated over a thousand COVID-19 patients, said, “We are seeing a large number of patients with anal fissures, mainly those who have recently undergone treatment for moderate to severe COVID-19. " Surgeon Dr. Paresh Gandhi shared his experience, "On an average, I treat 5-6 patients with fissures daily. These patients have a history of Covid-19 for 3-4 weeks".

Porwal said, "Excess vitamin D can lead to constipation. Passing hard stools can lead to fissures. Similarly, excessive use of vitamins or zinc can lead to diarrhea." Significantly, the formation of a cut or crack in the anus or anal canal is called an anal fissure. Anal fissures often occur due to hard and large bowel movements. “If you feel the pain while passing hard stools or defecation or if you bleed while passing stool, then these could be symptoms of a fissure.
