Vijay Salgaonkar’s Story Could Be Coming To An End

Drishyam: The Conclusion is expected to bring the long-running conflict surrounding Vijay and his family to a close, completing the storyline across three films.

However, that may not necessarily mean the end of the Drishyam franchise. According to a Mid-Day report, producer Kumar Mangat Pathak and director Abhishek Pathak are already discussing possible ideas for what could come next.

The reported plan isn't to continue Vijay Salgaonkar’s existing family storyline. Instead, the makers are said to be considering a fresh narrative with a different set of characters.

The report stated, “Kumar Mangat and Abhishek have decided that with Drishyam 3, Vijay Salgaonkar and his family’s years-long story of the accidental murder and its cover-up will end. But they also have the Drishyam title registered. Everything is at a speculative stage, but they are discussing that the franchise name may be carried forward with Vijay Salgaonkar. However, it will be a different character set in a new world. The story and remaining characters too will be new.”

Drishyam 3 Cast And Release Date

Directed by Abhishek Pathak, Drishyam: The Conclusion stars Ajay Devgn and Tabu in leading roles. The ensemble cast also features Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, Prakash Raj and Ishita Dutt.

The third instalment began filming in Goa in December and continues the story established by the first two films. The Hindi franchise is based on the Malayalam film Drishyam, which has also been remade in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

Yash's Toxic has continued its box-office run through the Raksha Bandhan holiday, taking its total India net collection beyond Rs 165 crore by the end of Day 3. After a massive opening of more than Rs 100 crore, the film saw a sharp drop on its second day. Its third-day earnings have also slipped, with collections falling 29.3% by the end of the day. Here's a look at the latest box-office figures and how Toxic is performing so far.

'Toxic' Day 3 Box Office Collection

The Raksha Bandhan holiday appears to have offered Toxic some support at the ticket window. The film recorded an occupancy of 17.0% by the afternoon on its third day, before its collections settled at Rs 26.60 crore for the day.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Toxic opened with an impressive Rs 101.10 crore on Day 1. However, collections dropped substantially on Day 2, when the film earned Rs 37.65 crore. That represented a 64% decline compared with its opening day.

After two days, the film had already crossed the Rs 137 crore mark in India. By the end of Day 3, the India net collection had climbed further.

On Day 3, Toxic collected a net Rs 26.60 crore from 19,390 shows. Its total India gross collection now stands at Rs 197.70 crore, while its India net has reached Rs 165.35 crore.

The film also added Rs 4.00 crore from overseas markets on its third day. Its overseas gross collection has so far reached Rs 23.75 crore, taking the worldwide gross total to Rs 221.45 crore.

How Much More Does 'Toxic' Need To Become Yash's Biggest Film?

Yash's biggest commercial success remains KGF Chapter 2, which emerged as a major worldwide blockbuster following the actor's rise to international fame with KGF Chapter 1.

Released in 2022, KGF Chapter 2 featured Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon alongside Yash. The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 120 crore and went on to earn Rs 1,250 crore worldwide, according to IMDb.

For Toxic to overtake that figure and become the highest-grossing film of Yash's career, it would need to collect more than another Rs 1,060 crore. Its performance in the coming days will determine whether it can mount a challenge to that benchmark.

Yash Makes A Big Comeback With 'Toxic'

Negative reviews appear to have affected the film’s theatrical run, with its Day 2 collection falling well below half of what it made on the opening day.

Toxic Day 2 Box Office Collection

Toxic had a powerful start at the Indian box office, collecting Rs 101.10 crore on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. However, the film’s earnings dropped considerably on Thursday.

Sacnilk reports that Toxic brought in Rs 36.40 crore on Day 2. That represents a decline of 64% compared with its opening-day business. The film also recorded an occupancy of 25.7% on Thursday.

With the second-day figures added, Toxic has taken its India net collection to Rs 137.50 crore.

The film may have encountered a setback on its second day, but Toxic made a major impact when it opened. The Yash-led film set several records on its first day and became the highest-grossing Kannada film of 2026.

It also emerged as the biggest-grossing Kannada film of the year on its opening day. Yash, meanwhile, became the only actor in Indian cinema to have two films that opened with Rs 100 crore at the box office.

The earlier screenshot showed Toxic with a 5.5/10 rating. In the newer image shared by the user, the rating was not visible, while the number of likes remained on the page. The development comes as the film continues to receive a divided response. Several viewers have criticised the film’s handling of violence and its screenplay, while its supporters have pointed to its action, performances and visual treatment.

There has also been a separate controversy surrounding reviews of the film. A day after its release, a YouTuber shared a screenshot of a legal notice he said he had received from the film’s team following his negative review. The notice was issued on behalf of KVN Monster Mind Creations LLP, identified in the communication as the producer and copyright owner of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups. The creator had posted a mocking review of the film on his channel.

Director Meghna Gulzar has penned a heartfelt note about her upcoming film Daayra, revealing how the project pushed her creatively into unexplored territory. Reflecting on the film’s themes, she said her background in sociology taught her that life exists in shades of grey, and that very idea lies at the heart of Daayra.

Taking to X, Meghna Gulzar shared a two-page note tracing the journey of Daayra and describing how the film took her to “unseen and unvisited places”. She also revealed that the film explores the idea of “duality” at its core.

Her note began, “I was born in Mumbai. Having lived here all my life and having travelled extensively across India, I thought I knew most of the city and the country through my life’s journey so far. But the journey of Daayra took me to unseen and unvisited places.”

She continued, “And that’s just the geography. Daayra took my creativity to areas I have never explored before. It took my social awareness to reach what I didn’t know I had.”

She also reflected on her background in sociology, and expressed that life and society cannot simply be divided into black and white. “As a student of Sociology, I learned that our life and our society are not binary. It’s not just black and white. There is a spectrum of grey that we exist in,” she wrote.

She added that she has explored this “grey” through films such as Talvar, Raazi, Chhapaak and Sam Bahadur, but Daayra takes the idea even further. “Daayra for me, not only explores that grey… It invades it... it attempts to dismantle it. And that is the irony of Daayra,” she wrote, adding that while the film is neither black nor white, it is also “always dual”.

Kareena, Prithviraj’s Characters

Gulzar also offered a glimpse into the characters played by the film’s lead actors. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays DCP Raman Kumar.

The filmmaker described bringing together two major stars from the Hindi and Malayalam film industries as a dream come true. She explained that Daayra draws inspiration from several real incidents that have taken place across India. “Daayra is a story that takes place, not in a particular city or state of India; but does happen almost everywhere and anywhere in our country,” she wrote.

Although both Ajooni and Raman are law enforcement officers, Gulzar said they frequently find themselves on opposing sides.

“Kareena’s Ajooni is fiercely righteous. Prithviraj as Raman is righteously fierce. As in life, so in Daayra, they are neither black nor white. They are both swirling in a sea of grey,” she wrote.

She described Ajooni as “stoic and unreadable”, adding that she “cracks people and situations with a smile”. Raman, meanwhile, is described as the “hinge to Kareena’s Ajooni”, carrying a “caged rage” and “almost never” smiling.

“The two are the Yin and Yang of Daayra,” Gulzar wrote.

Vijay Deverakonda was last seen in the Telugu musical fantasy comedy-drama Sing Geetham, directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao.

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing Ali G back to the big screen, more than two decades after the character first became a television sensation. Amazon MGM has released the trailer for Ali G: Who Iz I?, a new mockumentary centred on the swaggering London character. The film follows Ali G as he discovers that his longtime girlfriend Julie is eight months pregnant and heads to America in an attempt to revive his former fame. Cohen secretly filmed the project, continuing the approach used for Borat, Brüno and Who Is America?. The film also marks Cohen’s directorial debut and reaches cinemas on October 23.

Ali G Returns With A New Mission

The new film picks up with Ali G after two decades of what the studio describes as “chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’”. His plans change when he discovers that Julie, played by Morgana Robinson, is expecting their child. According to the official synopsis, Ali G travels to America after realising that he will soon have another mouth to feed. His attempt to reclaim his old status, however, leads him into situations involving people who could threaten both his future and that of his unborn child.

The trailer brings back Cohen’s distinctive performance as Ali G, mixing scripted situations with the mockumentary format associated with some of his best-known work.

From Da Ali G Show To Who Iz I?

Cohen created Ali G for Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998 before the character received his own series, Da Ali G Show. The character later made the jump to cinema with 2002’s Ali G Indahouse, directed by Mark Mylod. Cohen has also used similar undercover techniques in Borat, Brüno and Who Is America?, placing his fictional personalities in real-world situations to provoke unexpected reactions.

He announced Ali G: Who Iz I? in July through an Instagram video performed in character. He wrote, “Dey haz finally made a documentary about me. And it ain’t dat crap one about da penguins, dis one haz got at least twice as much animal sex.”

Sacha Baron Cohen Makes Directorial Debut

Ali G: Who Iz I? represents Cohen’s first film as a director. He has also written and produced the project through his Four by Two Films banner. Petr Jákl and Emily Kob serve as executive producers. Cohen remains active across film and television. His recent credits include playing Mephisto in Marvel’s Ironheart, as well as appearances in Netflix’s Ladies First and Prime Video’s Balls Up.

Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s Alpha is set to make its OTT debut, giving viewers a chance to revisit the YRF Spy Universe film at home. Directed by Shiv Rawail, the action thriller arrived in cinemas on July 3 and marked the franchise’s first female-led film. Alia plays R&AW agent Sita, while Sharvari portrays her estranged twin sister Durga Kaul. Bobby Deol features as the antagonist, with Anil Kapoor also part of the cast. The film received a mixed response during its theatrical run and earned modestly at the box office. Netflix has now confirmed its streaming date for August 28.

Alpha OTT Release Date

Netflix confirmed on August 27 that Alpha will begin streaming on the platform from August 28. Sharing the announcement on social media, the streaming service wrote, “Get ready to join the Alpha gang (Heart emoji). Watch Alpha, out 28 August, on Netflix!” The digital release comes less than two months after the film opened in theatres. Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha expands the YRF Spy Universe with a story centred on two female agents and their complicated connection.

Alpha Plot And Cast

The film follows Sita, played by Alia Bhatt, a highly trained R&AW agent who is pushed towards becoming an elite Alpha soldier. Sharvari plays Durga Kaul, Sita’s estranged fraternal twin, adding a personal layer to the spy-driven story. Bobby Deol plays Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat, the main antagonist. His experiments involving a powerful serum called Alpha become central to the narrative. Sita is kidnapped and brought under his control, eventually being transformed into a super-soldier.

The official plot summary describes the protagonist as someone driven by revenge who uncovers hidden truths about her own life while taking on anyone who gets in her way. Anil Kapoor also features in the film, while Hrithik Roshan makes a cameo appearance as his War character Kabir.

Alpha Box Office Performance

Despite its franchise connections and star cast, Alpha had a relatively modest theatrical run. The film was reportedly made on a budget of around Rs 100 crore and collected approximately Rs 58.86 crore net in India. Its overseas earnings stood at about Rs 29.05 crore, taking the reported worldwide gross to Rs 99.10 crore. The film finished as the eighth highest-grossing Bollywood release of 2026 and became the lowest-grossing film in the YRF Spy Universe so far.

Netflix Breaks Silence On Taapsee Pannu's 'Gandhari' Plagiarism Row: 'We Take Originality Very Seriously'

Netflix has addressed the plagiarism allegations surrounding Taapsee Pannu's upcoming film Gandhari, after writer Kalyan Bandi claimed that the project bears similarities to a story he had written and registered in 2019. At the film's trailer launch in Mumbai, Netflix India executive Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh said the pitch in question was “very different” from Kanika Dhillon and Taapsee Pannu's film.

Netflix Responds To Gandhari Plagiarism Allegations

Speaking at the trailer launch, Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director, Original Films, Netflix India, was asked about Bandi's claims against the film and its association with Netflix executive Monika Shergill.

She said, “At Netflix, we take originality and artistic attribution very seriously. We receive multiple pitches and the pitch in question is very different from Kanika Dhillon and Taapsee Pannu's Gandhari. I won't make any other assumptions. Please watch the film.”

Ruchikaa also reiterated Netflix's position on original storytelling, saying, “We are always committed to the originality of our storytellers, be it someone who's on a streak of 5 or 6 films or if this is their first film. So, at Netflix, we are very clear on that stand.”

What Has Kalyan Bandi Claimed?

Writer Kalyan Bandi has alleged that he developed a story titled Gandhari in 2019 and registered both the story and synopsis. According to his account, the narrative focused on a mother who takes on the persona of a fierce goddess while trying to save her child from a child-trafficking racket.

Bandi, an IIT Madras alumnus who works as an Inspector with the Central GST and Customs department, said he first contacted Monika Shergill on LinkedIn in 2019, when she was associated with Voot. He claimed he subsequently shared an eight-page story and a two-page synopsis with her.

He said the material was acknowledged but was later deemed unsuitable for the company's commissioning slate at the time.

Bandi has also said that he continued developing the project and approached other production companies, including Baweja Studios and JioHotstar. After Netflix announced its Gandhari in 2025, he said the title and elements of the project prompted him to raise objections.

Kanika Dhillon Denies The Allegations

Kanika Dhillon, who has written and produced Gandhari, has rejected the plagiarism claims. Her production house, Kathha Pictures, described the allegations as false and insisted that the film was independently created.

The production house said, "Our attention has been drawn to allegations circulating on social media and in certain publications to the effect that our forthcoming film Gandhari copies another person's concept and uses that person's title. These allegations are false, and we deny them unequivocally. Gandhari is an original work, written and produced by Ms. Kanika Dhillon and developed by Kathha Pictures. Its story and screenplay are Ms. Dhillon's own work.”

Dhillon also addressed the issue at the trailer launch, saying, “I am a writer first and then a producer. Hence, I totally respect somebody's sentiments. But in this particular case, I have never met the writer. I am sure once he sees the film, he will get a clear picture. And as Ruchika said, Netflix is committed to very stringent rules and parameters. So, I am sure even he’ll get clarity once everything comes out.”
