Zahan Kapoor talks about grandfather Shashi Kapoor
Recalling his early years, Zahan said, “He was literally just my dadaji. He was at home and I would come home from school… dad would be at work so he was at home and he was much more of a presence in the house. He would enjoy watching his TV and cricket. He was a fixture at the dinner table. We have all our meals together, so breakfast time and dinner time… My memories of him… going out for lunch meals together. My memories of him are very family-centric.”
He admitted that, as a child, he had no idea about his grandfather’s legendary stature in Indian cinema. “It’s so funny and I really consider that a blessing. I did not know. I remember there was a time when I was young and I had no idea; one day I came home and I think Amitabh Bachchan sir was at home. I remember he was clean-shaven at the time, so it was ’90s and I remember coming in and being like ‘hain’. I didn’t understand it also at the time. Dadaji said, ‘Namaste karo’ and then, ‘Haan, theek hai, jao.’”

On his resemblance to Shashi Kapoor
On the topic of his resemblance to Shashi Kapoor, Zahan acknowledged, “Haan voh toh hai hi, bolte hain. It’s that tricky thing… I have not consciously done anything. There’s a certain resemblance. I think there’s a mix of everyone, I think there’s sometimes… I remember images I’ve seen of Papa ji, Prithviraj Kapoor and I’m like, ‘Oh facial structure I see where it comes from.’ I see my mom in me a lot I see my dad also in some of his younger photos. There’s also dadaji, of course, but he’s the most memorable impression for everyone.”
Initially, he worried about being constantly compared to Shashi Kapoor but has since come to view it differently. “When somebody makes that comparison, I used to feel worried, I don’t want to be a victim of comparative, you know, live in the shadow. But now, I’m managing to kind of change my perspective on this."
"When somebody shares that with me, what I think it means is that they are remembering or are reminded of the feeling that they were left with which was instigated by my grandfather. Let’s say that feeling is rekindled, so it is like going to a place where you have that familiar smell of a dish that you used to eat in your childhood. It’s a nostalgic feeling and I am in service of that,” he concluded.
