Mahesh Bhatt Reveals Parveen Babi Was Once Married, Says Her Husband Moved To Pakistan And Never Returned

In a recent interview, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt opened up about his relationship with Parveen and shared that the actor was married and he learned about her marriage after they were already together.

Parveen Babi, one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars of the 1970s and ’80s, had a deeply troubled personal life that remained largely hidden from the public eye. In a recent interview with BBC News Hindi, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt opened up about his relationship with Parveen and shared previously unknown details about her past, including a brief and rarely discussed marriage.

Mahesh Bhatt says Parveen Babi was married

Bhatt, who was romantically involved with Parveen while still married to Kiran Bhatt, revealed that he only learned about her marriage after they were already together. “About her getting married, I got to know about it later when we were already in a relationship,” he said. According to him, Parveen never really spoke about her ex-husband, but the subject would occasionally come up during visits from her mother, who lived in Junagadh. “When her mother would visit from Junagadh, she would discuss this sometimes because by then we were in a relationship. I was living with her. So there, it was discussed that she had been married once and then the man moved to Pakistan,” he shared.

When Parveen's ex-husband wanted to meet Mahesh Bhatt

Bhatt further recalled an incident from 2003, when he travelled to Pakistan for a film festival. He mentioned being approached by someone who claimed to know Parveen’s ex-husband, although they never ended up meeting. “Many years later, in 2003, I visited Pakistan for a film festival. There I was told that someone wants to meet you but I couldn’t meet them. I never said I don’t want to meet him but it somehow did not work out. I was thinking why would he want to see me? I was never a person who shut my door to anyone,” he said.

The filmmaker also touched upon the turbulent time they shared together, a period marked by personal crises and emotional instability.

In a previous conversation with 'The Times of India', Bhatt had spoken candidly about how his failing films and crumbling marriage left him vulnerable. He admitted to finding solace in Parveen during this period, even as both of them struggled with their own demons. “The scene was scary – I got into LSD and Parveen went through a series of nervous breakdowns. I went through trauma and a hell of my own making for two and a half years – this is reflected in Arth,” he had said.

Parveen Babi passed away in 2005 at the age of 50.
