Isha Ambani’s Cartier-Inspired Necklace: A Royal Connection
While the two necklaces look remarkably similar, subtle differences lie in the size of the diamonds, certain design elements, and the total number of stones. Interestingly, both necklaces trace their inspiration back to a single iconic piece—originally designed by legendary jeweler Jacques Cartier for the Maharaja of Nawanagar in 1931.
The royal family of Nawanagar was known for its exceptional collection of jewels. This necklace, made using rare Golconda diamonds, remained in the family’s possession until 1960, when Cartier reacquired it. Over the years, the necklace changed hands, the central diamond was recut, and the remaining stones dispersed into circulation.
Although the original necklace no longer exists in its complete form, Cartier recreated it for Ocean’s 8 using archival images. The version worn by Anne Hathaway in the 2018 film was reduced in scale by about 15–20% to better suit her frame, as the original necklace had been designed for a man. According to Vogue, the recreated necklace cost approximately $150 million.

At the Met Gala, Isha revealed that the jewellery she wore belonged to her mother, Nita Ambani. While it's not confirmed whether the piece is an original or custom recreation, many believe that the Ambanis took inspiration from the iconic Cartier design to craft their version of the necklace.
This year marks Isha’s fifth appearance at the Met Gala. She wore a custom outfit designed by celebrated Indian designer Anamika Khanna and was styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania. In a behind-the-scenes video shared on Anaita’s Instagram, it was revealed that the final outfit fitting happened just two days before the event—making the stunning ensemble even more impressive.
