In recent weeks, several Asian nations, including Singapore and Hong Kong, have reported a noticeable uptick in COVID-19 infections. Health authorities have attributed the surge to waning immunity levels and reduced booster coverage among vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly.
Singapore has seen a marked increase, with approximately 14,200 cases recorded by May 3, indicating a 28% year-over-year rise. China is also witnessing numbers nearing its previous summer peak, while Thailand’s Songkran Festival in April is believed to have contributed to a spike in cases. Despite the surge, Singapore’s Ministry of Health has reassured the public, stating, “There is no indication that the variants circulating locally are more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to previously circulating variants.”
