Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan vs Maalik Box Office: Rajkummar Rao’s Film Gains Momentum, Shanaya Kapoor’s Debut Struggles

Rajkummar Rao’s Maalik sees improvement with ₹5.25 crore on Day 2, while Shanaya Kapoor’s debut Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan struggles at ₹73 lakh.

The weekend box office saw mixed fortunes for two new Bollywood releases—Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan and Maalik. While Shanaya Kapoor’s much-anticipated debut has had a slow start, Rajkummar Rao's political thriller is showing signs of improvement.

Underwhelming Start for Shanaya Kapoor

Shanaya Kapoor’s first theatrical release, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, co-starring Vikrant Massey, has failed to make an impact at the box office. According to early estimates from trade portal Sacnilk.com, the film earned just ₹43 lakh (net) on Saturday, following a modest ₹30 lakh on its opening day. This brings the film’s total India net collection to ₹73 lakh after two days.

Despite moderate buzz around Shanaya’s debut, the romantic drama is yet to cross even the ₹1 crore mark. The film recorded low occupancy across theatres with an average of 15.25% on Day 2. Morning shows saw only 7.52% occupancy, while afternoon and evening shows improved slightly at 15.60% and 14.72%, respectively. The night shows performed best at 23.14%.

Originally set to debut with the now-shelved Bedhadak, Shanaya finally made her Bollywood entry with this release. However, her launch vehicle hasn't lived up to the hype.

Rajkummar Rao’s Maalik Gains Slight Momentum

In contrast, Maalik—starring Rajkummar Rao—showed a noticeable uptick on Day 2. After collecting ₹3.75 crore on its opening day, the film added approximately ₹5.25 crore on Saturday, bringing its total two-day net collection to ₹9 crore.

The occupancy trend for Maalik was more encouraging. Morning shows began with 6.40%, rising steadily through the day—16.95% in the afternoon, 19.14% in the evening, and peaking at 32.85% during night screenings.

Directed by Pulkit, the film features a strong ensemble cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Manushi Chhillar, and Saurabh Sachdeva. Supporting roles are played by Saurabh Shukla, Anshumaan Pushkar, Swanand Kirkire, Rajendra Gupta, and Baljinder Kaur.

While Rao’s performance has been appreciated, Maalik has received a mixed response from both critics and audiences. The film hasn’t yet matched the Day 1 success of his previous outing Bhool Chuk Maaf, which had opened with ₹7 crore.
