Amid intense election campaigns and political strategies, the entire Delhi and all political parties had their eyes on the Matia Mahal seat. As the counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly Election Results 2025 is almost complete, this seat has now gone to Aam Aadmi Party.
AAP's candidate, Mohammed Aaley Iqbal, secured a decisive victory from the Matia Mahal seat, one of Delhi’s Muslim-majority constituencies. After 16 rounds of counting, Mohammad Iqbal received 58,120 votes, defeating BJP’s Deepti Indora by a significant margin of 42,724 votes. Deepti Indora managed to secure a total of 15,396 votes. The Congress had fielded Asim Ahmed Khan from this seat, who received 10,295 votes, according to the Election Commission.
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, AAP’s Shoaib Iqbal won from Matia Mahal with 67,282 votes. BJP’s Ravinder Gupta secured 17,041 votes, while Congress candidate Mirza Javed Ali received 3,409 votes.
Political History Of Matia Mahal Constituency
The Matia Mahal constituency was created in 1993 after the abolition of the Metropolitan Council. Since then, this seat has been represented by veteran politician Shoaib Iqbal, who contested this seat seven times from different parties. He won this seat five times until he was defeated in Delhi Assembly Elections 2015, where he lost to Congress candidate Asim Ahmed Khan.
The people of the Matia Mahal constituency have witnessed the era of five different political parties winning this seat. While the MLA from the Janata Dal party ruled this seat from 1993 to 1998, Janata Dal (Secular) won this seat in 2003. Lok Janshakti Party grabbed this seat in 2008 and Janata Dal (United) won from the Matia Mahal seat in 2013.
However, since 2015, the candidate from AAP has been getting elected in this constituency.
In the run-up to the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, earlier, AAP gave a ticket to its sitting MLA Shoaib Iqbal. However, Shoaib expressed his inability to contest and later the ticket was given to Aaley Muhammad Iqbal, who is a councillor from Chandni Mahal Ward and had been deputy mayor of Delhi.
In Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the joint candidate of AAP and Congress was fielded from Chandni Chowk constituency, whose part Matia Mahal assembly segment. However, BJP's Praveen Khandelwal won this seat, defeating Congress' Jai Prakash Aggarwal by a margin of over 85,000 votes.
After the reunification of three municipal corporations into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Constituency was divided into three wards i.e., Chandni Mahal, Sita Ram Bazaar, and Delhi Gate. Currently, all these wards are AAP's turf.
