The NHRC on Friday said it has issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government over reports that many students are risking their lives by "hopping on check dam pillars" for crossing the Betwa River to reach their school in Vidisha district.

They reportedly take this "dangerous route", because it reduces the distance from 13 km by road, to just 1.5 km, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said.

The rights panel in a statement said it has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about "school students risking their lives by hopping on check dam pillars to cross the Betwa River to reach school in Vidisha district".

The Commission has observed that the content of the news report, if true, raises serious issues of violation of human rights.

The NHRC has noted that Article 21A of the Constitution guarantees free and compulsory education to be provided by the state to children, aged 6 to 14. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 also makes education a right of every child between the age of 6 and 14 years. Further, the Supreme Court, in Avinash Mehrotra vs Union of India (2009) case, has held that the Right to Education necessarily includes the right to a safe school and safe infrastructure, the NHRC said.

The Commission has held that the absence of a safe mode of transport for children to reach their school "amounts to a negation of their fundamental right to education with dignity".

Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh chief secretary, seeking a detailed report on it in two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on August 4, a video of the children hopping perilously across the wide gaps in the exposed check dam pillars, has gone viral on social media, the statement said.

The villagers reportedly express their inability to drop off their children at a faraway school as they have to work in the fields. The option they have is to either stop sending them or continue this way, the rights panel said.

Reportedly, a student failed her final exams after missing the school, because she could not cross the pillars due to her short height.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking direction to the Centre and States for a mandatory biometric-based attendance system for school students to dismantle dummy educational institutions.

A bench of Justices P Narasimha and Alok Aradhe asked the PIL petitioner advocate N K Goswami to approach the high court, while clarifying that this court was not inclined to entertain the petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution.

Bhopal: In a bid to connect with Gen Z through the teachings and legacy of Lord Krishna, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced the launch of the 'Bhagwan Shri Krishna Medhavi Chhatravritti Yojana', under which 102 meritorious students across the state will be awarded scholarships of Rs 1 lakh each.

The state government said the initiative aims to promote Indian knowledge systems, traditions, arts and holistic learning among the youth. According to the government, the scholarship is intended not only to reward academic excellence but also to encourage students to develop skills inspired by the concept of Lord Krishna's 14 Vidyas (branches of knowledge) and 64 Kalas (arts).

The scheme will cover students studying at the school, college and university levels. Its detailed framework, including eligibility criteria, selection process and evaluation parameters, will be prepared by the Shri Krishna Pathay Nyas.

Chief Minister's Cultural Advisor Shriram Tiwari said the initiative seeks to connect the younger generation with India's cultural heritage by drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna's life.

"If we try to understand Lord Krishna in today's context, we can identify him as the first 'Gen Z'. By the age of around 11 years, he had accomplished extraordinary feats in Mathura. Later, under the guidance of Maharishi Sandipani in Ujjain, he mastered the 14 Vidyas and 64 Kalas, which enabled him to transform society. The scholarship reflects Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's vision of promoting India's traditional knowledge systems alongside modern education," Tiwari said.

Tiwari said 102 scholarships would be awarded every year, including 51 scholarships for school students studying in government, central government, tribal welfare, aided or private schools. The remaining scholarships will be open to Higher Education students pursuing higher education, including those in ITIs, IITs, medical, technical and journalism courses, as well as eligible private candidates and researchers.

He further said applicants would have to register through a dedicated website and answer an online questionnaire containing more than 30 questions based on the prescribed themes. Different applicants would receive different sets of questions, and if the number of successful candidates exceeds the available scholarships, the final selection would be made through a lottery am row, with the Congress accusing the state government of using the name of Lord Krishna for political pong eligible candidates.

Congress Media Department Chairman Mukesh Nayak said that instead of introducing such schemes, the government should focus on addressing issues affecting students.

"If the government wants to connect with the youth, it should stop paper leaks, end irregularities in examinations, ensure schools and colleges function on time, teachers attend classes regularly, examinations are conducted on schedule and results are declared on time. Why are you misusing the name of Lord Krishna? Why are you turning educational institutions and campuses into centres of ideological conflict? There should be a healthy campus culture and discipline. Only then will Gen Z accept you," Nayak said.

The Congress leader further took a swipe at the ruling party, alleging that it had shifted from invoking Lord Ram to Lord Krishna for political reasons.

Meanwhile, the BJP hit back at the Congress over its allegations, accusing the opposition of having a problem with the Sanatan tradition and opposing every positive initiative of the government.

"The Congress has always had a problem with Sanatan Dharma. Earlier it objected to Lord Ram, and now it has started objecting to Lord Krishna as well. This scheme is an initiative to honour meritorious students and promote India's cultural heritage," said Pankaj Chaturvedi, BJP spokesperson.

New Delhi: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced significant changes to its accreditation and admission framework for medical institutions offering postgraduate and fellowship programmes. The Board has also introduced 11 new courses across several specialised areas of medicine.

The latest changes are aimed at making postgraduate medical education more transparent, improving verification of candidates during admissions, and strengthening the requirements that hospitals and institutions must meet to obtain or retain accreditation.

The revised framework also places greater responsibility on accredited institutions to publicly share information about their facilities, faculty, and clinical training capacity.

Medical Institutions Must Publish Mandatory Information

Under the updated framework, accredited hospitals and medical institutions will have to create a dedicated "NBEMS Mandatory Disclosures" section on the homepage of their official websites.

Institutions will be required to publish specified information covering areas such as training infrastructure, faculty strength, clinical workload, bed occupancy, and stipend details. This information will need to be checked and updated during the first week of every quarter.

The Board has warned that institutions could face consequences if they fail to provide the required information, do not update the disclosures on time, or publish inaccurate or misleading details. Such non-compliance could affect accreditation-related processes, renewals, and the inclusion of seats in the centralised counselling matrix.

Both newly accredited and existing institutions have been given three months to implement the disclosure requirement. They must also submit the direct link to their disclosure webpage through the Online Accreditation Application Portal.

NBEMS Tightens Verification Rules For Medical Admissions

The Board has also strengthened the process for checking candidates' eligibility and original documents before they are allowed to join NBEMS courses.

Accredited hospitals have been directed to conduct proper verification through the Online Portal for Joining and Registration (OPJR). The move follows observations that some institutions had allowed candidates to join courses without adequately checking their original documents and eligibility requirements.

Under the revised rules, hospitals could face a Rs 1 lakh penalty for each candidate admitted without the required verification. The penalty can also apply where institutions submit false, fabricated, misleading, or unverified documents during the admission process.

Hospitals have further been advised to follow the prescribed timelines for registration and document submission on both the OPJR and Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) portals.

11 New Postgraduate And Fellowship Courses Introduced

As part of the latest update, NBEMS has added 11 programmes covering a range of specialised medical fields. The newly introduced courses are:

For each programme, the Board has specified requirements covering areas such as candidate eligibility, course duration, faculty strength, infrastructure, patient load and accreditation conditions.

The expansion gives postgraduate medical aspirants more specialised course options across areas including oncology, pulmonary medicine, surgery, nuclear medicine and immunology.

There is no change in the clinical establishment requirement applicable to broad-speciality programmes such as DNB and Post MBBS Diploma courses. However, hospitals seeking accreditation for DrNB and FNB programmes will now have to meet stricter conditions.

Under the revised framework, such hospitals must have been operating as clinical establishments for at least three years. They must also have completed a minimum of two years of clinical operations before submitting an application for accreditation.

The changes are intended to ensure that institutions seeking to train postgraduate and fellowship students have adequate operational experience and the clinical environment required for specialised medical education.

Starting high school can be an exciting time. Students meet new people, study new subjects and gain more independence. But for many, high school can also feel harder to manage.

The Institute for Educational Reform reports about one in three Victorian students in years 7 to 9 show signs of disengagement from school. This can include patterns of student absences, drops in students’ willingness to learn, and a disconnect between students and their broader school community.

So why are the first years of secondary school so difficult? This is what our research, published by the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry in May, says.

Our research ----------------- There is a lot going on for young people as they start Year 7. As well as starting high school their bodies and brains are going through big transitions as they move into adolescence.

In our research, we set out to understand whether school disengagement was caused by the developmental changes that come with early adolescence or the transition to high school.

A 2022 education reform in South Australia gave us a rare opportunity to better tease apart the effects of growing older from the effects of changing schools.

Before 2022, in South Australia, students generally started secondary school in Year 8. In 2022, the reform moved the starting point to Year 7. This meant two groups entered secondary school in the same year: one group in Year 7 and one in Year 8.

This was factored into data from more than 20,000 students who took part in an annual South Australian survey. The responses we looked at were from students transitioning from primary to secondary school.

Students answered questions about their happiness, optimism, life satisfaction, their ability to manage emotions, sadness, worry, perseverance and cognitive engagement. We tracked these wellbeing metrics from 2019 to 2025.

Here, cognitive engagement refers to students’ persistence with classroom tasks, ability to generate ideas, and positive attitudes towards learning.

What we found ------------------ We found students’ wellbeing worsened across all eight areas in the two years after they entered high school. The largest falls were in cognitive engagement and perseverance, which fell by around 11 per cent and 8 per cent respectively during these years.

This means students were less likely to work hard, to keep going when work became difficult or to try another approach when they became stuck. Happiness, optimism, life satisfaction and emotional regulation also fell during this period, while sadness and worry increased.

These declines in wellbeing continued for more than two years after students moved to high school. The pattern started to level off in the third year after moving. But students did not return to their pre-transition levels of wellbeing throughout the remainder of their high school years.

Other findings ----------------- Importantly, student wellbeing remained stable in both the Year 7 and Year 8 groups before the transition to high school. However, both groups showed similar declines after starting secondary school following the 2022 reform. Overall, the Year 8 group’s wellbeing worsened by around 3-8 per cent after starting high school, while the rate for Year 7s was around 4-10 per cent.

Because the two groups were different ages but experienced similar declines when they entered secondary school, the findings suggest the transition itself played a larger role in the decrease in students’ wellbeing and engagement than age alone.

Our findings also showed girls experienced larger declines in all wellbeing and engagement domains than boys. Students living in remote areas also showed longer-lasting declines in all areas, continuing into the third year after high school transition.

What’s causing the decline? ------------------------------ When transitioning to high school, students have to adapt to a range of new challenges. These include navigating larger campuses, more complex timetables, greater academic competition and increased responsibility for managing schoolwork and daily routines. If students are not yet equipped with the organisational and study skills to meet these demands, they may lose confidence in their abilities, become less motivated, and find it harder to stay engaged with learning.

At the same time, many students are leaving friends and familiar teachers from primary school behind. This means they have to build new friendships within an unfamiliar social environment. These disruptions may weaken their sense of belonging at school and contribute to feelings of anxiety and loneliness.

How to improve engagement --------------------------------- Helping students to develop practical learning skills, such as planning schoolwork, setting goals, breaking large tasks into smaller steps and trying a different strategy when they get stuck, may help them feel more confident and capable as they adjust to the demands of high school.

Research also suggests stronger links between primary and high schools could help with transition. With families’ consent, information sharing between primary and secondary schools can build a more complete picture of each student’s learning strengths, support needs, friendships and any other concerns that may affect their adjustment. This should be a two-way process in which students and families have regular opportunities to share their experiences and concerns.

Many schools already provide orientation days, school tours and buddy programs to help students settle in. But our research shows students also need support that continues well beyond the first days or weeks of high school.

NEET UG Re-Exam: Supreme Court Denies Relief To 6 Students Seeking Original OMR Sheets

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has declined to grant relief to six students who sought access to their original OMR sheets from the NEET UG re-examination to verify their marks.

The students had approached the apex court seeking their original OMR sheets, arguing that they wanted to cross-check their marks and verify the scores awarded to them in the examination.

However, the Supreme Court observed that the matter involved a limited individual grievance and directed the students to approach the Delhi High Court with their concerns.

The development comes amid continued concerns among some NEET UG candidates over the verification of their examination scores and answer sheets.

Students Seek Original NEET UG Re-Exam OMR Sheets

The six students had sought directions for the authorities to provide their original OMR sheets from the NEET UG re-examination. Their plea was aimed at allowing them to independently verify whether the marks awarded to them were correctly calculated.

The candidates told the Supreme Court that access to their original OMR sheets was necessary to check their scores.

Supreme Court Directs Students To Delhi High Court

The Supreme Court did not provide relief to the students in the matter. Instead, it said that their grievance was limited to their individual cases and asked them to raise the issue before the Delhi High Court.

The direction means that the students can now pursue their request for access to their original OMR sheets before the Delhi High Court.
