Khan Sir's Coaching Centre Closed After Firing At Patna Institute; Staff Members Assaulted

The coaching institute run by noted educator Khan Sir remained closed on Wednesday following an attack and vandalism incident at the premises in Patna's Musallahpur Haat area late Tuesday night.

According to police, around 10 to 12 individuals allegedly entered the coaching complex at approximately 10:55 pm, assaulted staff members, damaged office property, and tore banners and posters displayed at the institute.

Security Guard Injured In Attack

A security guard deployed at the coaching centre sustained injuries during the incident and is currently undergoing treatment, officials said.

The attackers allegedly fled the spot before police arrived. A police team reached the coaching institute around 11:15 pm and initiated an investigation.

Khan Sir arrived at the premises later in the night after being informed about the incident.

Allegations Of Firing Under Investigation

Khan Sir alleged that shots were fired during the attack and claimed the incident was orchestrated by individuals linked to a neighbouring coaching institute.

According to him, tensions had arisen due to his institute's lower fee structure and academic performance. He further alleged that threats had been issued against the coaching centre in recent days.

However, police said they have not yet confirmed whether any firing took place during the incident.

Rivalry Angle Being Examined

Sources indicated that investigators are examining whether the incident was linked to an ongoing dispute involving competing coaching institutes in the area.

Patna SP Diksha Kumari said preliminary information suggests that a disagreement related to posters may have preceded the incident.

"About 10 to 12 people reached the spot. Confirmation regarding firing has not been established yet. Investigation is underway. One person has been injured and CCTV footage is being examined," the officer said.

Coaching Centre Closed, Security Tightened

Following the attack, security has been enhanced around the coaching institute, with police personnel deployed in the vicinity.

Students were seen gathering outside the coaching centre after news of the incident spread.

Khan Sir has announced the temporary closure of the institute, and sources said the coaching centre may remain shut for the next few days as authorities continue their investigation.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved and determine the circumstances that led to the violence.

Leader of the Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday evening met 17-year-old Sarthak Sidhant, whose blog alleged irregularities in the procurement process linked to the CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

Sidhant is the second teenage whistleblower in three days to receive public backing from Gandhi amid the growing controversy surrounding the OSM system.

The meeting came hours after Sidhant appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education and presented his findings related to the OSM procurement process. It also took place shortly after the Centre transferred the CBSE chairman and ordered an inquiry into the procurement of OSM services.

Rahul Gandhi’s Message To Sarthak

Sharing a post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi, “Sarthak, apne sidhanton pe adig raho,” using the student’s name in a wordplay to say, “Sarthak, stay firm on your principles (‘sidhant’).”

He also used the hashtag “#TenderInvestigator”, referring to the teenager’s scrutiny of tender documents available on the Central Public Procurement portal.

Student Details ‘15 Discrepancies’ In Tender Documents

According to PTI sources, Sidhant delivered a detailed presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education outlining his analysis of CBSE tender documents related to the OSM system.

Members of the committee are currently reviewing the implementation of the system and examining complaints raised by students and other stakeholders.

Ahead of the meeting, Sidhant said his review of multiple tender documents had revealed several inconsistencies.

“There were many discrepancies. I have just compared them. There were at least 15 discrepancies as per my blog. I would like to highlight three or four of them,” he said.

His presentation reportedly focused on changes made to eligibility and qualification requirements across successive tender documents.

Sidhant has alleged that CBSE “rewrote rules” to favour Coempt EduTeck, the company linked to the OSM system. Both CBSE and the company have denied the allegations.

CBSE has, however, acknowledged errors in the OSM system and said corrective steps have been taken over the past week.

Rahul Gandhi Earlier Met Another Student

The latest meeting follows Gandhi’s interaction on May 31 with Vedant Shrivastava, the Class 12 student who discovered that the Physics answer sheet uploaded under his roll number was not his own.

Vedant’s post on X had crossed 2.5 million views and prompted CBSE to admit there had been a scanning mix-up.

Sharing a video of that interaction, Gandhi wrote, “A revealing chat with my fellow ‘anti-national Soros agents’.”

“Vedant and his friends are brilliant, brave young Indians who asked CBSE and the Modi government simple questions but got insults instead of answers. They deserve a bright and secure future. We will make sure they get it,” he added.

In the video, Vedant told Gandhi that he had been labelled a “Pakistani agent” after raising concerns over the answer-sheet issue.

Gandhi responded by joking about the accusations and asked the students, “Were you also called ‘terrorists’? Tell me!”

He then remarked, “Seventeen-year-old ‘deep state agents’! Show their faces… Come on, show the faces of these ‘terrorists’!”

Vedant’s elder brother Siddhant said critics had attempted to portray them as “deep state agents” instead of addressing their complaints.

Teen Whistleblowers Become Faces Of Wider Exam Controversy

Sidhant, Vedant and 19-year-old Nisarga Adhikary, an ethical hacker who claimed to have identified vulnerabilities in the OSM portal, have emerged as prominent faces of the growing backlash against examination-related controversies this year.

Nisarga had earlier said in a blog post that he identified major security flaws in the CBSE portal in February and reported them to CERT-In.

The broader debate has also intensified following the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 over a paper leak, with a re-test scheduled for June 21.

The issue has additionally drawn attention from the Cockroach Janta Party, an online movement demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and planning a protest at Jantar Mantar on June 6.

Rahul Gandhi has separately demanded Pradhan’s removal and called for a judicial inquiry into the OSM controversy.

Top-Level Reshuffle

According to the ACC order dated June 2, Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, an IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre and currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Department of Home, Ministry of Home Affairs, has been appointed Chairperson of CBSE in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary.

The order also stated that Rahul Singh, a 1996-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre who was serving as CBSE Chairperson, has been appointed Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

The transfers follow reports that senior CBSE officials, including Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta, were facing administrative action amid questions surrounding the board's procurement processes.

OSM Procurement Under Scanner

The Centre has constituted a one-member committee to inquire into matters related to the procurement of services for CBSE's On-Screen Marking System.

According to an official notification, the committee will be headed by S. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission. The panel has been tasked with examining issues connected to the procurement process and has been empowered to seek assistance from officers of other departments and government offices whenever required.

The government has also directed the Capacity Building Commission to provide secretarial assistance to the committee to facilitate its work.

Report Due In One Month

The inquiry panel has been asked to submit its findings within one month to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The committee's report is expected to determine whether any procedural lapses occurred in the procurement of services for the OSM system and could shape any further administrative action arising from the investigation.

Shortly after reports emerged that CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta were being removed amid the controversy surrounding the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, Opposition parties intensified their attack on the Centre and demanded stricter action, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

“The entire responsibility for the irregularities in CBSE lies with the Ministry of Education, and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is accountable for this,” the party wrote.

Congress Demands Minister’s Removal

In its statement on X, the Congress further alleged that the contract linked to the controversy was awarded under the supervision of the Union government.

“The contract to a corrupt company like COEMPT was awarded under the oversight of Dharmendra Pradhan and the Modi government. The Modi government cannot escape its accountability through these petty actions. Dharmendra Pradhan has no right to remain in his position. Narendra Modi should stop protecting him and dismiss him immediately,” the party said.

The company and CBSE have denied allegations of corruption, though the Centre has now ordered a probe into the matter.

Jairam Ramesh Questions Timing Of Transfers

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticised the government’s decision, saying the transfers appeared aimed at shifting responsibility onto bureaucrats.

“Today’s action, clearly timed for after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education’s meeting with the CBSE Board, is an attempt to distract and fix accountability on bureaucrats rather than the political leadership,” Ramesh wrote on X.

“It should be remembered that CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh had been given a two-year extension by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments as recently as November 2025,” he added.

Kejriwal Says Officials Are Being ‘Protected’

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal also questioned the government’s response to the controversy.

“What? CBSE Chairman and Secretary transferred? Bas? Is that govt’s response to such a huge scandal? Is that a punishment or protection?” he wrote on X.

How The OSM Portal Controversy Escalated

Over the past few weeks, several posts from students, parents and teachers alleging irregularities in CBSE’s OSM portal circulated widely on social media.

The issue gained national attention after two teenagers publicly flagged alleged flaws in the system.

Seventeen-year-old Sarthak Sidhant drew attention after publishing findings based on tender documents available on the Central Public Procurement portal. He alleged that CBSE had “rewrote rules” to favour Coempt EduTeck.

Separately, 19-year-old Nisarga Adhikary claimed he was able to hack the OSM portal and identify major security vulnerabilities.

In a detailed blog post published on his website and shared on X, Nisarga said he had identified several flaws in the CBSE portal in February and had reported them to CERT-In.

Before heading CBSE, Singh served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

An engineer by training, he holds a BTech degree in Computer Science along with a postgraduate qualification in Public Policy and Management.

Singh was appointed CBSE Chairperson by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in March 2024 as part of a broader bureaucratic reshuffle.

He succeeded Nidhi Chhibber, who later moved to NITI Aayog as Adviser.

In 2025, the Centre extended Singh’s tenure as CBSE Chairperson until November 2027. The extension was seen as an endorsement of his leadership at the board, which manages over 29,000 affiliated schools in India and abroad and conducts some of the country’s biggest school examinations.

OSM System Came Under Criticism

Questions around Singh’s tenure emerged after the implementation of the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

The digital evaluation system was introduced as a major reform aimed at streamlining answer-sheet assessment and speeding up result processing.

However, the rollout soon attracted criticism from students, parents and teachers.

Concerns were raised over technical issues, access to evaluated answer sheets and the procurement process related to the OSM project.

The board announced on Tuesday morning that the system is now operational and advised candidates to carefully follow the prescribed process while submitting applications.

The portal had remained inaccessible on June 1, triggering anxiety among students awaiting an opportunity to challenge their results. With the launch now confirmed, candidates can begin filing requests for both verification of marks and re-evaluation through the online platform.

How Students Can Apply For Verification Of Marks

Students logging into the portal will find separate sections dedicated to various post-result services. CBSE has allowed candidates to submit requests for multiple subjects at once or file individual applications separately.

To initiate a verification request, students must select the verification of marks option. Subjects for which scanned copies of evaluated answer sheets have already been obtained will appear on the screen. After choosing a subject, applicants can report issues such as missing pages, unattached supplementary sheets, absent graphs or maps, blurred scanned images, incorrect answer books, or evaluation of the wrong question paper set.

Before submission, students are advised to review all details carefully. Additional concerns can be added before the request is finalized. Once the application is confirmed, locked, and payment is completed, no further edits will be permitted. Candidates are also encouraged to save a copy of the application and monitor its status through the portal.

Re-Evaluation Process Explained

Students seeking a reassessment of specific answers must follow a structured procedure.

Applicants need to select the re-evaluation option, choose the relevant subject, and provide detailed information about the question being challenged.
The application requires candidates to enter the exact question number, corresponding page number, marks awarded, and the marks they believe should have been granted.
CBSE has instructed students to provide a clear and specific explanation for the discrepancy rather than vague justifications.
Multiple questions can be added within the same application.
Before freezing the request, students should thoroughly review all entries.

CBSE Revises Fee Structure For Revaluation 2026

The board has also introduced an updated fee structure for post-result services this year. Students will be required to pay ₹100 per subject for obtaining scanned copies of evaluated answer books, ₹100 per subject for verification of marks, and ₹25 per question for re-evaluation.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a refund provision. Under the new policy, students whose marks increase after re-evaluation will receive a refund of the fee paid for the specific question or questions that resulted in the revised score.

Revised Scores Will Be Final

CBSE has clarified that any marks modified through the re-evaluation process will be incorporated into the student's official academic record. CBSE had initially announced that the re-evaluation and verification portal would open on May 29, 2026. The board later postponed the launch to June 1, stating that the additional time was needed to provide a more transparent and technically reliable system.

Protesters Seek Minister's Resignation

The protestor said, "We are here to protest against the repeated paper leaks. The NTA has been facing one examination controversy after another, yet no accountability is being fixed. If the Education Minister continues to demonstrate such incompetence in handling the country's examination system, why is the government not seeking his resignation?"

Calls For Resignation Intensify

Calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan intensified after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG examination held on May 3 following allegations of a paper leak.

The controversy was compounded by fresh concerns over the CBSE's digital evaluation system after a 19-year-old hacker claimed to have identified vulnerabilities in the board's on-screen marking portal shortly after the declaration of Class 12 results.

Public criticism of the Education Ministry further grew after technical glitches disrupted the CUET-UG examination process. At several centres across the country, the issues reportedly delayed the start of the morning shift by three to four hours, triggering protests from students and parents.
