Explosions and air raid sirens caused panic in Punjab’s Pathankot, Firozpur, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur districts on Friday evening. In response, authorities imposed a complete blackout in these areas as well as in Fazilka, Muktsar, and Sangrur districts, news agency PTI reported.
Second Consecutive Night Of Blackouts In Punjab Amid India-Pak Tensions
In Pathankot and Firozpur, locals reported hearing loud explosion-like sounds. Similar reports were received from Gurdaspur and the Patti area of Tarn Taran, although there was no official confirmation regarding the source of the blasts. This marked the second consecutive night of blackouts and explosive sounds for residents in Pathankot.
District authorities issued advisories urging residents to switch off all lights, including those on mobile phones, cameras, and inverters, and to cover windows with curtains. Public announcements in Firozpur stressed, “Keep lights switched off. Keep the lights of mobile phones, cameras and inverter sets switched off. Cover windows with curtains. Cooperate with the district administration. We are here for your safety.”
In Hoshiarpur, the blackout was implemented at 8:15 PM, with Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain appealing to the public to stay indoors and remain calm.
These events follow India’s swift interception of Pakistani attempts to target military installations in Jammu and Pathankot on Thursday night. The Indian armed forces had earlier carried out precision missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘Operation Sindoor’. The retaliatory strikes came after intense shelling by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
